Youth, always part of our DNA
The staff working alongside Enrico Mattei, ENI's first president,
was made of future talents in the sectors of economics
journalism and politics.
He chose to have young people,
he decided on a company that did not want to hire anyone
coming from a private oil company because he did not trust them.
He set the maximum age for his managers at 35.
We were all young people around him.
I think the oldest of his managers was 41,
we were all so young.
Mattei turned to young people for culture too.
At just over 20 ENI chose Bernardo Bertolucci
to film a documentary.
From the height of creative freedom
a masterpiece was born, "La via del petrolio".
I was never told
to give the film an informative or celebratory side, even in the soundtrack.
On the contrary, I remember well they strongly encouraged me
to make it as much in my style as I could.
From cinema to art.
In 1958 Mattei supported a large exhibition in Milan dedicated to 370 emerging artists.
With names like Mimmo Rotella, Antonio Bueno, Ugo Attardi,
Renzo Vespignani, Giovanni Cappelli and many others,
are now part of ENI's artistic heritage.
From art to literature.
In 1955 ENI launched the in-house magazine "Il gatto selvatico",
director Attilio Bertolucci,
which became an amazing workshop for young talent.
It became, thanks to my father,
a magazine publishing pieces, I don't know, like Ginzburg every month...
it really was a good magazine.
Today it seems strange to think that a company magazine
was made by the most important intellectuals of the time.
Innovation, internationality, experimentation,
but above all, faith in the new generations.
These are ENI's values
and why it has always chosen to trust to young people and their energy.
This is our DNA.
