Hi my name is Dr. Steve Minors of Rehab Affects in Austin, Texas and today we are going to
be talking about lumbar non-surgical spinal decompression. Spinal decompression is the
process whereby in the lumbar spine we create a negative pressure inside the disk and let's
just assume that we're talking about this area. We have a bulging disk here and if you
can think about this segment right here as an Oreo cookie you have the chocolate Oreo
cookie here, chocolate Oreo cookie here and this is the creamy white center. And what
you are doing when you perform the non-surgical spinal decompression is creating negative
pressure in the creamy white center and you are, in essence, milking it and when you milk
it like that, that allows for fluid and nutrients to enter the disk essentially rehabbing the
disk. In the event let's say you have a herniated or bulging disk and that can alleviate the
pressure on the nerve and allow the disk to be rehabilitated if the outer wall of it is
torn which is referred to as an annular tear. Spinal decompression can rehab it to the point
where it allows those portions of the wall to heal well and decrease pain so the patient
who may present with pain in the low back or into the buttock or down the leg can be
alleviated by performing spinal decompression in this fashion.
