joining us today is dennis campbell he is editor in chief of u_k_ progressive
magazine also host of world view a dennis campbell on you to go to youtube
dot com slash world view show to subscribe free and uh... not miss anne
videos
dennis let's talk first about what's going on in turkey give us a sense of of
kind of broadly speaking what the situation is there
well that they're still unrest today i believe this is the first day of unrest
in in turkey
and uh... the
decides there are it
in the lol situation right now i'm not quite as much going on not quite as
fears the fighting
what has uh... started all this was uh... planned by the edited and
government of the prime minister there
to demolish a public park
uh... the jewish people places very high premium on the open spaces and treason
and open areas and
of this public park has become sort of up
of central
our theme for a lot of different things because they want to replace it with a
shopping mall
and uh... you know the old song take paradise is one of the parking lot
probably applies
but it's a symbol
of the the general state of unrest throughout the middle east right now
uh... turkey does border syria to the south and of course all of the unrest
there with the refugees streaming into turkey as well as into jordan and other
places the uh... multi number of uh... countries that are
are tossing around what's left of the country and and uh... how than the
president but for all saw you still in power it's just a a very nasty situation
it's not improving at all so compare and contrast i guess the question sounds
almost like a middle school essay question
uh... regular what what it what is your sense of how this situation compares to
the uprising in egypt that you observed so closely
well in egypt you had a group of of of students that you know ten years on had
decided they'd had enough of mubarak and u_n_
you know the course of of eighteen days they i've kept protesting in kept moving
forward this was on the heels of of tunisia which have gotten rid of a
brutal dictator so if you are a brutal dictator you're in trouble know the
difference here is that turkey has always been considered
of somewhat more moderate where uh... unbearable governing system prime
minister is considered a a moderate but what we're having uh... uh... on in in
this sort of a situation is allot of uh... disenfranchised people are really
coming out
very very strongly some seventeen hundred people have been
imprisoned but it appears that their is on maybe not quite as bad as what was in
egypt there is a a secret police force and and prison system that people
protesting against and uh... this does not seem to be going away today is what
can we expect kind of in the next week or two
to happen in turkey
well that's the big question right now you know that we have this ruled but
uh... you know if is the prime minister or earlier in the case of mubarak or you
know you're going away back to delhi
if they make three speeches there are
aso uh... generally speaking they they come forward involved in some sort of a
speech now d
people leaving the prime minister has said is that uh... tweeters and is a
menace to society
uh... but he's not really come out and made a formal speech or talk
they normally come out they tried to placate the demonstrators say
normally come out and say yes we see your point you have been wrong
within the typically
do that when state television is down and there's not a lot of uh... i'm not a
lot of the people around to watch it
uh... then they usually come back with more defiant second stage
in which they say those that would lead to promise that those who have
perpetrated these crimes will be caught conducted justice and usually the third
speech is the one in which they announced the resignation now that's the
the the the far end of the spectrum
in all likelihood it's going to settle down a little bit
i think uh... the the smartest think of it in his group to do
is to back away at it from this proposed shopping mall project
and uh...
let uh... ten percent of down a bit too because this one has become sort of a
cause celebre everything
that is wrong inside the country and when you have a lightning rod like that
you wanna make certain that you you step back away from it
however
this is the middle east
when you're in the middle east in persia
uh... the tendency to back away from anything in to do what we would consider
to be the smart for the right thing to do
is absolutely not done so
who knows what's going to happen but next week last thing i want to quickly
thoughts on it is
now although for different reasons we've had turkey and of course we've spoken
with you about in shipping you talked about tunisia and we've talked about so
many other cases
do you get the sense that were entering kind of anew era in terms of how these
types of uprisings can happen
maybe because or at least in part connected with social media or is it
just a coincidence that we've seen a number of these over the last few years
welcome here you know the the the raging debate has been over egypt and of course
hindsight is always at twenty twenty
and you know with the uprising have happened without twitter without face
book on the answer is yes
everybody needs it knew to go to to have a square
that's the place where everybody tries to go for major demonstrations things
not so
everybody in this case knows where to go to try to go
and that's this public park with their intending to turn into a shopping mall
twitter is a great died and i'm not a diagnostic organizing tool it's a tool
that you can use for
operations for moving people from place to place
but governments are getting much smarter now and there are new uh... codes in the
h_t_t_p_ in the uh... the the the the setup where they were to h_d_t_v_ nine
out
of and there are pieces of that but it could be included in there that are
going to allow government
to actually shot the internet down we've seen that in syria
whereby cheryl aside as leader of the created the internet whenever it's been
convenient that's going to happen more and more as we go forward
we had a guy from hong kong on our show on several times in his john jackson and
he talks a little bit about security and how to keep things like this going in
the tour system of all those other things up
it's becoming an issue
but that they are also getting smarter having learned from what happened to
mubarak in egypt
all right thanks camel we're gonna continue following it go to youtube dot
com slash world view show
make sure you are getting uh... dennis is show and also youtube dot com slash
book view t_v_ dennis thanks as always will talk to you next week
thank you
