Brazil and Uruguay further a vision of continent-wide cooperation. At a meeting last week, Brazilian
President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva and his Uruguayan counterpart Jose Mujica signed several
collaborative agreements that they said also serve as the foundation for the peaceful union
of all Latin American nations. Discussions between the two leaders were symbolically
held in the Uruguayan city of Rivera and in the neighboring Brazilian city of Santana
do Livramento, which are woven together by streets that are virtually without borders.
Concluding their meetings, the 75-year-old President Mujica also paid a moving tribute
to the Brazilian leader who will leave office in October as he said, “I don’t know how
much longer I have to live, but it won’t be enough to be able to express my gratitude
for all that you have contributed, without your even being aware of it, to the history
of Latin America.”
We are gladdened by your amicable time together and fruitful accords, Your Excellencies. Blessed
be your vision of unified peace and prosperity in extending to all Latin American neighbors
and the world
