Hi buddies! I'm Sef, "My sweet Torment"'s singer and lead guitarist
Yes, the mad guy of spikes mask.
Not the ugly guy, the other one.
Well (light laugh),
today I'm gonna teach you how to put a hard drive, Well (light laugh),
today I'm gonna teach you how to put a hard drive,
into an iMac of 27 inches.
Materials
2 suction pads
Phillips screwdriver
Torx N-10 screwdriver
Apple's SSD official adapter
SATA wire for data
SATA multiplier, 1 SATA 15PM to 2 SATA 15PH
Well, as you see I have laid the iMac
and the first thing you have to do is
open this overlay
to extract the RAM.
Now, what we have to do
is push these flaps
and pull them towards us
for extracting the RAM.
As you see, these are laptop RAM modules.
Well, now what we have to do to access to the monitor
is remove the upper glass,
for this we will use two suction pads;
if you have two professional ones, it's OK, I have grabbed
the first ones i have found in the kitchen,
so we will place one in each top
left and right
and we'll stretch out
and then to us.
now with the TORX screwdriver we have to take out
these four screws
that hold the screen
to the left side
and these other four
hold the screen to the right side.
Now to take out the screen we will introduce softly
the screwdriver and we will pry
both on one side
and the other.
But don't pull completely the monitor,
because there are plugged some wires that we have to unplug carefully.
We have lifted up the screen and we have to unplug
these little wire,
that one, which is from the graphic card
this one, which is from the power supply
and we will unplug in all of them in that order.
Once done
we will be able to raise easily the monitor
do not raise more than 45º
and we will be able to unplug in the screen's temperature
sensor's wire.
Now, we can take out the screen
just pulling towards us.
As you can see we have access to the iMac's internal side
and for whom are not acquainted with it.
I'm going to review quickly how the distribution is done.
this is the right speaker,
heat sink,
card reader,
CD/DVD reader and recorder,
graphic card with its heat sink,
Wi-Fi,
hard drive,
the mother board,
the processor's heat sink,
general power supply,
monitor's power supply,
another heat sink
and left speaker.
Well, for plug inion the second SATA hard drive,
we have to search the plugs
that are just behind this;
in order to do that we have to take out the motherboard
So get to work.
Advices: Use an anti-static wristband
otherwise touch a moment the grounding
or use latex gloves.
Leave the screws organized for the subsequent reassembly.
The first thing i'm going to unplug is the CD/DVD reader and recorder.
Now we have to work with the most difficult piece,
which is just behind of the little apple.
What we have to do is grab it with the two fingers
and raise it.
Now lets take the motherboard what you have to do is
grab from each heat sink,
and push gently upwards,
then to you,
and the motherboard will go out by itself.
Well here you can see the SATA wires
that are the only ones we have not unplugged
that go till the hard drive.
Right,
between those, there is a third plug
here hidden, I don't know if you can see it properly
where you can read SSD, there is where we have to plug
our second hard drive
It's able for both SSD drives as for SATA Hard Drives
Now we have to substitute this piece,
which is next to the hard drive and the CD/DVD reader
and to unplug it we have only to
take this screw.
Once we have took the screw we only have to replace one piece for the another one,
we pull towards us
and be careful with all wires
we take out these piece
and we plug in the newest
For those that you don't have the Apple's official adapter
grab double-sided tape and cut 8 little pieces
of about one inch.
and glue each piece in each side of the hard drive
and the remaining 4 pieces over the previously pasted pieces.
After that you put it in the hollow, just under it'd be
the CD/DVD recorder.
I usually estimate these side of the hard drive with this
plastic, I don't know if you can see well enough with the camera,
and as backwards as possible and the most important thing
the SATA plugs must face upwards for later
plugging the wires for this way and pass them to the base
our new SATA wire
and the most easy thing, reassembly the computer.
Notice the irony
For reassembling the motherboard, I'll advice you
putting the computer stand up.
Firstly you put in the motherboard
check that all wires are out
of course all that must remain outside.
and then move it left and right, gently
until it fits.
Once fitted, the first thing we must do
it's place all the screws in the motherboard
don't tight them completely, first place them
for seating the motherboard
Once we have finished positioning wires
you can tighten them, but don't go too far
because you can over-tighten them.
Well, as you can see it's completely assembled
we have had to do here some hack for
being able to have all wires ordered
For those that you have the optic unity here, it will be
easier for you because you will have more hollow.
and switch on the computer to check that everything is OK.
¡The moment of truth!
Well, now I'm going to explain fast how to format
the hard drive for those that you have never done it
before or you don't know how to do it.
Go to "Launchpad"
"Others" y "Disk utility".
Once in this window, on the square on the left
we will see all the hard drives we have installed
in this case we'll choose this one, on you case choose
the one you have to format,
and go to the tab "Partitions"
Here you choose the number of partitions you want
in our case just one, and in "Options" you have to choose the kind
of partition you want.
"GUI partition table", for the actual computers
of apple.
"Apple's partition map" for the PowerPCs or older computers
or "Master Boot Record" if you are going to use any program of Windows.
In our case we have chosen "GUID partition table",
we fill with the name of the hard drive,
and in "format" we choose the format we wish for being able to
install or being able to create the format.
We push over "apply",
"Create partitions"
and for accessing it, simply, we have to
right click the mouse, "open"
as you see, here we already have our hard drive.
You can create folders, make shortcuts
or whatever you want.
Once finished the installation of the hard drive,
It is recommended check if everything runs correctly
for this we will go to the upper-left side,
push over the apple,
and we will push over "About this Mac".
Here, in the button of "More information", we will find
a window with some tabs, in which we'll see
all the system's information.
Firstly we'll check the storage.
Here it must appear, as you see, the two hard drives
we have installed.
and in "Memory" we'll check if all modules are
correctly installed.
I also advise you that in "General view", going to
"System's report" and check that all your
hardware devices are correctly installed.
