>> Okay. So let's talk about level of improvement you can expect with hearing aids.
You have ear hearing and you have brain hearing.
Your ear hearing is the function of the ear, making sure it's working.
It's typically where the problem comes, called sensory neural hearing loss,
it's where the nerves in your ear die.
And you can check out another video on how your ears work to figure that out.
But once the sound gets into your ear, the ear sends the sound to the brain
and then the brain processes and reads it and interprets it and tells you what you heard.
So the longer that you have hearing loss, the longer your brain goes
without hearing and translating those signals.
So you know what they say, if you don't use it, you lose it.
And that's never been more true than it is with your hearing.
So some people will come in my office and they'll tell me,
you know, I think I'm doing okay.
I can get by.
How much longer can I go?
As soon as there's any hearing loss, mild, mild to moderate hearing loss,
we want to aid that right away, not because you can't get [inaudible] along today,
but because we need the brain to constantly be getting those signals.
If you want the brain to go without those signals for 10 or 15 years,
and now you want to wear hearing aids and we give the signal back, it's not a guarantee
that your brain will know what to do with them.
Now during the hearing test, that is something that we're going to test and we'll be able
to let you know what level you can expect.
Often with a mild hearing loss or a moderate hearing loss,
you can get up to 100% of your hearing back.
So we can get you very, very close to normal.
Someone with a more severe hearing loss that has gone unaided for years, they may only be able
to achieve a 60 or 70% ability to hear.
And certainly that's better than 10 or 20, but we have to be realistic
with how long you've had the hearing loss.
So when we say to have a hearing test every year,
it's so important because the faster we catch hearing loss,
the better you'll be for the long run.
The longer you put it off, the more you're risking any type of hearing in the future.
