The Deregulation of Energy Baltimore Residents Wanted
There have been some significant changes in energy bills since the deregulation of energy
Baltimore homeowners asked for was received. More people are asking the government to open
up utility markets to create choices and options for consumers. This can be a tricky situation
as there can be unpredictable results.
The theory is that creating competition will force suppliers to lower costs and improve
service to win business from consumers. When the government regulates a single provider,
there are always concerns about whether they are operating in the consumer’s best interests.
Does Energy Deregulation Work in Baltimore? Many localities, including Baltimore, are
taking advantage of energy deregulation. This is giving a lot of people more choices of
providers and in some cases, the opportunity to choose a provider for their method of energy
generation. There is still some significant discussion about the effectiveness of these
changes. Rural areas often have smaller companies that may not be able to effectively compete
with companies that have a higher density of customers in cities. There are also concerns
about municipally owned operations like Baltimore gas and electric. Those are not run strictly
to make a profit, but are part of local government operations.
This is the problem that the Baltimore municipal facility experienced during their change from
regulation. To make sure that consumers were not effected during the conversion, the government
put a freeze on the rates so that there would be no wild swings in prices until the market
stabilized. For most people this meant they could keep their same utility provider and
pay a lower rate during the freeze. Unfortunately, market conditions changed and fuel prices
skyrocketed near the end of the freeze and the utility said it would have to make a huge
rate increase to be able to meet their costs. Most people will enjoy the benefits from increased
competition from deregulation. There will have to be some plans to accommodate other
providers to keep the playing field balanced so all consumers everywhere have equal access
to the same resources. Until there is a completely free market where all the utility companies
and residents have equal access to all resources and services, there will always be people
who wonder what is so important about the changes.
