This primal and liquid substance
that inhabits all materials
its body taking forms of substracts and moods.
its steam, sometimes forming rain,
sometimes heavy icescales
Through the earth it creates shafts, valeys,
produces humus and lumens.
It goes from translucid to dark,
its mother!!
Pure H2O...
A place that is a Biological Reserve
has to be untouchable.
It is an area of air purification,
is very important for the climate
and research.
What we have here is a living laboratory
of the rainforest ecosystem.
The less contact we humans have with this area,
the more it will be preserved.
Duas Bocas is a conservation unit
that is part of NSCU
National System of Conservation Units.
The water of Duas Bocas consists
of huge rivers, small streams,
the river Panelas and the river Naiá-assu.
Their fusion into the lagoon is what gave the preservation unit its name.
Duas Bocas became a conservation unit in 1965,
created as a forest reserve
and recategorized as biological reserve in 1991.
That is why only scientific research and environmental education
are allowed inside the conservation unit.
In this place, we are passing by right now,
we almost always see an alligator of about 2.5 meters.
You can tell that he is always over there, every day,
because the area is almost cleared.
We come here every day trying to take a picture
but it is very difficult to get close.
It is undeniable that one of our
planet's greatest values is water.
We can't produce water out of thin air.
If we consider that 97.5% of all the water
on earth is salt water
and that fresh water suitable
for for consumption is less than 1%
we might think that we have to take good care of this water.
Because it looks like there is water in abundance, but it is not.
Causing waste in Brazil and in other countries
became a habit.
People think that the ressources of our planet
are infinite, that they will never end.
Cleaning trash with water is kind of crazy
If you are aware that it is a mechanical process you can
use something else, something hard to sweep the garbage.
But people keep using water.
Let's devide the water in various levels,
devided by its various functions.
The same water is not suitable for everything.
We are liquid. 75% of our body consists of water.
We are a container filled with water.
If you think about where this water passes,
about which path it takes,
it means that it does not belong to anyone.
And it takes the shape of all that is around it like the being itself.
It passes through us and everything, completely out of our control.
The water has a very close relationship
with the flow of our thoughts.
The water retains the memory of this cup,
retains the memory of the bottle,
retains the memory of whatever it occupies.
Retained in the sense that it can occupy that space.
It was luck finding the King Vulture here for the first time.
When I made a project in Itaúnas
I was told that the King Vulture no longer exists in this state.
ut when I placed a bait for the Puma and a trap camera here in Duas Bocas,
the first animal eating the bait was the King Vulture.
We recorded it on camera.
I'm sure it exists here in Duas Bocas.
Chasing and trying to find the King Vulture is complicated.
That is why we use carrion,
chicken guts and carcasses.
We ask for donations from slaughterhouses in the region
and we will place the bait on the edge of the lagoon of Duas Bocas.
What? You are right, go slow.
Finally, we managed to photograph the King Vulture.
I see it right now on the top of a tree very close.
With its beautiful white color,
red neck, black face yellow skin on the beak.
Very beautiful.
The state government needed water
and they found it here in the right quality and quantity.
Vitória could easily be supplied
using the power of gravity.
In the government of Jerônimo Monteiro, the engineer Ceciliano Abel de Almeida
came to the conclusion that the best way to secure the supply
would not be the river Jucu but Duas Bocas.
It was a very important political and technical vision,
because from that point on the reserve could truly be preserved.
And if that had not happened back then,
the reserve would no longer exist.
It was a very important milestone.
We had a the first dam, which supplied Cariacica Headquarters, built in 1908.
In 1912 the first expropriation by the state government took place.
They acquired land to build a dam.
The dam was completed in 1918
and served for several years to supply Vitória.
In the 50's the second expropriation took place.
It was for the construction of the new dam,
the dam we have today,
a 51 acres lagoon.
When the dam was completed the decision
to relocate several families
still living in the area was made.
When opening the dam there was a major technical problem.
It severely leaked at several places.
Losing over 6 meters of water depth.
In 1956 Duas Bocas could no longer meet the capital's requirements.
Due to the rapid growth of the region,
the area of influence of Duas Bocas was limited
to an area closer to its origin,
Duas Bocas, that once supplied the capital,
today supplies only Cariacica and its surrounding neighborhoods.
Finding the animals I want to photograph is not easy.
We have to find their trailsin the forest,
know where they are, know where they come from,
what they eat and when they pass by.
That is why we use trap cameras
and the help of several experts,
so we learn how to locate them.
We use baits that attract animals
to where we want them to be in order
to take photos at a location of our choosing.
The Paca prefers mango,
the Wild Dog and the Raccoon like papaya.
We try chicken liver and bacon for the Puma.
We found a puma footprint
the size of a human hand.
We saw traces, footprints,
half eaten animals the Puma had left behind.
But there was no real record of the puma.
And in 2012 the Últimos Refúgios team
made this record of the Puma.
We just found the Puma.
Its that big that it almost occupies the whole sceen.
If we have an animal from the top of the food chain,
called umbrella species,
we know there is the Puma and the Puma is surviving well,
it means that the rest of the food chain is in good condition.
I think a person should get to know
what's close to oneself.
It makes no sense in having sporadic and isolated environmental education projects.
These things have to be taught at school.
That is why we do environmental education in biological reserves
even though tourism is not allowed.
It is possible to walk the main trail
and people can see that the river is extremly clean.
Sometimes you need an intelligent project.
Demonstrating an intelligent project is the
best education we can give
when we want to change habits.
Nowadays, with the development of science and technology,
we are able to actually create a better world.
Where is the best place to create a better world?
Conservation Units!
If you do not have a minimum of social balance,
you cannot have environmental balance.
There are some architects who try to connect
refuges and built-up terrain. How?
Could green corridors be a way of
getting people to connect these two things?
Will we ever arrive in a time where we
do not need laws to preserve certain places?
Will we ever have a strong, open-minded conscience?
Enki,
gushing, eye of water,
tears
vocalized as evoke,
aqua,
Wasser, water...
living water!
