When I graduated from UTEP, President Natalicio was not the president of the university.
For different reasons and especially when I was at the Ministry of Commerce, we began
to connect again. The most important key for me for what is
going on at UTEP has been her vision and leadership. Because she sets the goal and she goes.
When we have a leader of this nature we should not let it pass by. We should really understand
and back all those plans. So companies, people and sponsors should take
a little bit of time to understand what is it she is trying to do and where is it that
she wants to take this institution. In the last couple of days I have had a chance
to spend a lot of time with faculty and students. which is different from coming here for a
meeting or when I was a student. The changes that have taken place at UTEP
are enormous. If all of these people can pitch in with talent time, money we can continue
the growth of the university and it will be tremendously helpful for the region.
You don’t have to go anywhere else. But just come me here, set up an appointment,
take the tour, visit the facilities see what is being done and where she is taking
the university. And You will buy in to his project.
I think we need to strive a little farther out. We need to look to the region for help
not only locally but in the region--look to companies like ours. How can an institution
like this help us in the future? There are tremendous opportunities. People,
I would ask you, alumni, former students, anybody who has had the opportunity to be
touched by UTEP or be part of UTEP should take a minute and really push for this project
so we can have a tremendous and successful institution on the border.
And why not? I will go one step further and say- Once the institution is a tier one, how
can we get a little jump over that fence and set some sort of a presence of UTEP also on
the Mexican side? So that we can build that final bridge for
these students. I invite every one- you need to come and see
what is happening at UTEP.
