WE’RE HAVING A WORKSHOP ON SPATIAL NARRATIVES
AND DEEP MAPS.
SINE THE SPATIAL TURN OF THE 1990s,
WE HUMANISTS HAVE BEEN CHASING SPATIALLY EMBEDDED DATABASES,
WE’VE BEEN LEARNING G.I.S.,
WE’VE BEEN DOING A LOT OF THINGS TO TEST WHAT IT MEANS
TO ANALYZE SPATIAL INFORMATION,
BUT WE REALLY HAVEN’T THOUGHT ABOUT HOW TO WED THAT
CAREFULLY TO ONE OF OUR TRADITIONS,
WHICH IS NARRATIVE.
AND SO WHAT WE’RE GOING TO EXPLORE IN THIS WORKSHOP
IS HOW TO CREATE SPATIAL NARRATIVES,
AND WE’RE GOING TO DO IT IN 3 WAYS.
WE’RE GOING TO FIRST EXPLORE AND TEST THE CONCEPTS
OF SPATIAL STORYTELLING
AND DEVELOP A PROTOTYPE DEEP MAP.
THAT IS A MAP THAT IF IS CAPABLE OF CAPTURING
OF CAPTURING ALL OF THE CONTINGENCY, AMBIGUITY,
AND MULTIPLE PERSPECTIVES THAT WE KNOW EXIST
IN THE PAST AND IN CULTURE.
AND THIS IS A PROJECT OF THE VIRTUAL CENTER FOR SPATIAL HUMANITIES,
WHICH IS THE COLLABORATION AMONG THE 3 UNIVERSITIES
THAT ARE LISTED THERE.
WE’RE GOING TO DO THIS IN 3 STAGES.
THE FIRST IS THROUGH AN EXPERT WORKSHOP
WITH GEOGRAPHERS, HUMANITIES SCHOLARS,
AND COMPUTING SCIENTISTS
IN WHICH WE’RE GOING TO THINK ABOUT
WHAT SHOULD BE AND WHAT WOULD BE
AN APPROPRIATE THEORY OF SPATIAL NARRATIVE
AND HOW IT IS THAT WE CAN IDENTIFY THE TOOLS
OR IDENTIFY THE NEED FOR TOOLS TO HELP SUPPORT
THE CONSTRUCTION OF SPATIAL STORIES.
THE INSTITUTE ITSELF, WHICH WILL TAKE PLACE DURING THE SUMMER OF 2012,
ABOUT 6 MONTHS LATER,
WILL INVOLVE 12 SCHOLARS CHOSEN BY APPLICATION
TO WORK WITH THESE SPATIAL NARRATIVES
WITHIN A DEEP MAPPING ENVIRONMENT.
AND A POST-INSTITUTE PROTOTYPE--
WE WILL DEVELOP A POST-INSTITUTE DEEP MAP
CAPABLE OF SUPPORTING MULTI-SCALER,
SPATIAL, TEMPORAL NARRATIVES.
THIS WILL BE TESTED AND ULTIMATELY REFINED
AND MADE AVAILABLE TO OUR SCHOLARLY COMMUNITY
BUT THE RESULTS OF THE WORKSHOP WILL ALSO BE PUBLISHED
IN A TRADITIONAL FORM IN THE INDIANA UNIVERSITY PRESS
SERIES ON SPATIAL HUMANITIES THAT I EDIT
AND IN AN ENHANCED EBOOK FORMAT.
WE WILL USE AN EXISTING NEH PROJECT,
ONE WE’RE COMPLETING NOW,
THE DIGITAL ATLAS OF AMERICAN RELIGION,
WHICH WRESTLES WITH HOW YOU VISUALIZE COMPLEX INFORMATION
WITHIN THE GEOINFORMATION SYSTEMS ENVIRONMENT
AND EVEN GOING BEYOND THAT,
AND WE WILL ADD TO THAT A VERY RICH DATABASE OF INFORMATION
THAT WE AT THE POLIS CENTER COLLECTED
ON A VERY LARGE PROJECT WE DID AT THE END OF THE 20th CENTURY
ON RELIGION AND URBAN CULTURE IN INDIANAPOLIS.

WE’RE GOING TO HAVE A 3-WEEK ADVANCED INSTITUTE AT UCLA
FOCUSED PARTICULARLY ON BRINGING PROJECTS TO THE POINT OF PUBLICATION
AND LOOKING AT HOW THESE NARRATIVES--
SPATIAL NARRATIVES, TEMPORAL NARRATIVES--
CAN BE EVALUATED AND LOOKING AT DIGITAL SCHOLARSHIP
IN A REALLY RIGOROUS WAY.
WE’RE PARTNERING WITH UC PRESS, VECTOR SCALER,
THE PLACES JOURNAL,
THE JOURNAL OF THE SOCIETY OF ARCHITECTURE HISTORIANS,
CAMBRIDGE JOURNALS ONLINE, AND THE MLA
IN ORDER TO EVALUATE DIGITAL SCHOLARSHIP
THAT IS WITHIN THE REALM OF MAPPING.
ONE OF THE PROJECTS-- OR ONE OF THE PLATFORMS
WE’LL BE EXPLORING IS THE HYPER CITIES PLATFORM
WHICH IS ALSO INTEGRATED WITH THE GOOGLE--
THE 12 MILLION OR SO VOLUMES OF THE GOOGLE BOOKS,
AND SO THE IDEA HERE IS TO CREATE ANNOTATIONS, NARRATIVES
THAT ARE CONNECTED WITH BOOKS, MAPS, AND INTERPRETIVE NARRATIVES.
ONE EXAMPLE OF THIS IS A PROJECT THAT WE’RE CURRENTLY--
YOU CAN SEE IT’S OBVIOUSLY A 4-DIMENSIONAL PROJECT.
TIME IS IMPORTANT HERE WITH THESE MODELS.
THE IDEA IS TO TAKE A VIEWER THROUGH A GOOGLE EARTH RENDITION
OF--WELL, IT’S BEEN RENDERED INTO MODELS OF THE ROMAN FORUM AND 404CE,
AND EACH PART OF THE ARGUMENT IS CONNECTED
WITH THE PARTICULAR GEOTEMPORAL PERSPECTIVE.

THERE’S AN ARGUMENT,
AND A USER CAN EXPLORE EITHER THE NARRATIVE
OR THIS GEOSPATIAL ENVIRONMENT IN GREAT DEPTH

BUT ACTUALLY THE IMPLEMENTATION OF THE ARGUMENTS,
THE DESIGN, THE SYMBOLOGY,
AND REALLY BRINGING THOSE TO THE STAGE WHERE THEY CAN BE PEER REVIEWED
AND EVALUATED BY PEOPLE, YOU KNOW, IN THE PRESS,

THE I-CHASS, THEY HAVE DONE AN AUGMENT REALITY OR IMAGE PROCESSING
WHICH ARE VERY IMPORTANT FOR PRESERVING ARCHIVES
AND ALSO SOCIAL NETWORK MODELING WHICH ARE VERY IMPORTANT FOR OTHER FIELDS OF HUMANITIES.
SO GIVE YOU AN OUTLINE OF OUR ACTIONS.
SO IT WILL BE--FIRST PART WILL BE 2 1-WEEK WORKSHOPS
LIKELY TO BE IN THE SUMMER OF 2012
BECAUSE THAT’S WHEN PEOPLE HAVE TIME TO ATTEND.
IT WILL BE OPEN TO ALL SCHOLARS FROM THE NATION,
AND WE WILL PROVIDE TRAINING FOR 4 CONCENTRATIONS.

WHICH WILL REQUIRE PRODUCT DESIGN MANAGEMENT.

BECAUSE IF YOU ONLY WRITE FOR SPECIALIST NETWORKS,
YOUR IMPACT IS LIMITED.
THE SECOND IS THE CREATION OF A GLOBALIZED COMMUNITY
BECAUSE YOU CANNOT THINK ABOUT HUNDREDS OF LANGUAGES
IN A GLOBAL NETWORK OF CULTURAL HERITAGE
WITHOUT WORKING WITH PEOPLE FROM VERY DIFFERENT PLACES
AND GOING ACROSS BOUNDARIES OF LANGUAGE AND CULTURE.
AND THIRD IT IS THE DECENTRALIZATION
OF AN ELECTUAL ACTIVITY.
AND THE CREATION OF A CULTURAL--
WE HAD STUDENT RESEARCHERS AND CITIZEN SCHOLARS
WORKING SIDE BY SIDE WITH ADVANCED FACULTY MEMBERS
AND WITH LIBRARY PROFESSIONALS.
WE NEED ALL OF THESE TOGETHER,
AND THIS EFFECTS, IN FACT, IN MANY WAYS
A TRANSFORMATION NOT OF THE HUMANITIES,
