Do you guys just want an opening statement? Or what do you...
Yes. Sure.
Um, I thought there were a lot of positives tonight,
uh, obviously coming out a win, uh, is a huge positive.
I thought we had an opportunity to work on things
down the stretch. For the most part, we did a good job especially for the first game.
I thought Sadie Webb obviously played really well and
I thought our bench really won the game for us, picked us up there when we needed it.
So, the good thing is, I think we have a ton of things
that we can work on and get better at, but I'm still okay with our performance.
Could you talk about, was there any individual player
that really surprised you during tonight's game
whether they performed exceedingly well or...?
Yeah. No question. That's a good question.
I thought Lindsay Carroll just really came... we thought she was good enough to deserve a chance,
she's kind of one of those girls that does good things in practice, but you wonder if it's
going to translate into a game and she definitely proved that it was.
So she earned a second chance for sure.
And we're excited about that especially coming in as a freshman.
I thought Karis Phillips, we did expect her to be a little more solid,
but I thought that she really brought some energy. Played really well for us.
So those two I would say surprised me a little bit.
You used a lot of your bench tonight. Are you looking to do that all season long?
Or are you still trying to find that right group of girls just to kind of bring it all together?
If you would have asked me before the game,
I would have said, you know, I thought we'd probably go eight, nine deep and that's about it.
Now, you know we had a little chat in the locker room.
that we've got a lot of kids that we have confidence that we can put in and they pick us up.
That can be a real positive if our girls stick together and know,
you know one game they may get six minutes and the next game they may get sixteen minutes
uh, or it can be a little bit of a negative if they let that get in their head a little bit.
But I know these girls well and I think it will be a positive
um, so I wasn't expecting to play that many,
but I am excited about that ability.
Defensively, you guys like, you guys played well,
it seemed though at times a little inconsistent.
Can you talk a little bit about that and you're going to do to work on that?
Yeah. I thought our defenses need a lot of work.
The big thing was we couldn't guard the ball and
part of that is I think you saw, we didn't do a good job
offensively of attacking the basket especially in the first half
and, uh, if you think about that, that means in practice if we're not attacking the basket
we're not practicing defensively guarding someone attacking the basket
so that's something we're going to have to work on
kind of on both ends, um, and I think that was the main thing
We've got kids that can do it, but we've just got to work on it more.
Our angles weren't very good, you know and, we've had a lot of stuff to work on
Honestly, we've done more offensive work than I would have liked to
um, I'd say right now, we're about seventy percent offense, thirty percent defense,
Probably in the next week, it's going to go more down to fifty-fifty.
Saw a little glimpse of zone there in the second half.
Were you just desperate for some sort of defensive way to stop'em or
or were you just trying to throw different looks at them?
Yeah, I mean I'm a coach that likes to play a little zone especially later in the game
um, I feel like sometimes once you go zone, it's hard to go back to man-to-man
and have that intensity, but I think it's something you'll see
I almost always like to try to save it to the second half if possible
I'd like us not to...
or to be a consistent man-to-man team that switches in... up some zone.
Hopefully, we can better defensively and do that.
If not, we may have to be someone that throws a lot of zones at them
and tries to mix them up that way.
coach, earlier in the game we talked a little about the defense,
especially the back door move from UIS.
What did you say to the girls during in the huddle
and things like that to initially stop that?
we just talked about, you know initially in the scout report,
we talked about how they like to attack the basket and then kick to the corner,
so we were a little aggressive on our recovery to the corner
we hadn't seen them go back door on film.
Of course, films from last year, a whole different team so
you don't have much of a scouting report but,
you know, we just talked about how they were really
looking to back door out of it.
I thought we did a much better job guarding it after those first couple media time outs
we got to get the ball out of bounds a couple of times, traveled with it a few times,
so it's good that our girls can make in-game adjustments
anything else?
No. Good win. Thank you coach.
Appreciate you guys.
