MELISSA NAGIN: Hi! I'm lactation consultant Melissa Nagin. If your baby could speak, he'd
tell you when he's full but you'll just have to settle for knowing the signs. I discuss
this and more with new mother, Iowa, after her her baby Jake's feeding session.
(INTRO MUSIC)
MELISSA NAGIN: So, right now, he came off naturally, we didn't pull him off uhm, you
know, he sort of started to slow down and then he sort of drifted backwards and now
you look at this baby who is so blissful! Uhm, the arm also tells you a lot: when they're
very, very hungry, the arm is up and tense, sometimes it'll grab at your shirt, start
sort of groping at the breast, and then as the feeding progresses, as their stomach becomes
much more full, as they're satiated, the arm sort of stops to drop and then we have this
and we know that this baby is full. During the feeding, what were you feeling? Was it
painful? Was it uncomfortable? Was it absolutely fine?
IOWA: In the beginning, it was like a painful like everytime when he taking, it's a little
bit better and better and better
MELISSA NAGIN: So, now the three week mark, you're feeling?
IOWA: [INAUDIBLE] great
MELISSA NAGIN: Really? Great! Excellent! That's what we wanna hear! So we just had a nice
feeding session with him and you had mentioned earlier that you were concerned because he
seemed to be eating so much more now, at about the three week mark. Uhm, this is very, very
typical and very, very normal because this is a typical growth spurt and the size of
the baby's stomach actually changes and tries to teach your body how much it needs to take
in, uhm, IÊhappen to have uh, these belly balls which show you how big the stomach is
and how much it can be taking it. And this, at Day Three, this was the size of the stomach,
uhm, by Day Ten, the baby's stomach is the size of a ping pong ball so look at how much
it's grown so this is how much the baby can take now and so he is gonna teach your body
to produce that much more, he's a little bit over that so, we're looking at about this
size, maybe a little bit bigger. The baby has growth spurt at two weeks, aroundÉ around
the two week mark, around the three week mark and then around the six week mark. And then
you have a little bit of a break until the three month mark and then the six month mark.
So yo have a little bit of a break now 'til, 'til six weeks. And during those times, you
will probably find that the baby, around around that time, is feeding a lot more frequently,
uhm, you might feel like you don't leave the chair at all during the day, uhm, and a growth
spurt should leave as quickly as it came, it shouldn't last weeks. Uhm, IÊknow that
two weeks runs right into three weeks and sometimes you feel that that's a it's a little
bit of a tight time per, uhm, but usually, they feed frequently to their bodies are telling
yours that, okay, I need to start need for you start producing more and my body's gonna
start taking more. But it's nothing to be concerned about, it's very, very, very
normal and uhm, it's all good in the long run for them; so the few days where you feel
like you're not really leaving, that's okay, it's, it's very, very normal.
