Village committee sells land illegally for US$300 million 3,000 policemen called in as angry villagers torch factory
On YouTube site, a lot of armed police officers are seen
entering Yilong Village in Dongshen Township, Zhongshan City, Guangzhou,
to take care of protestors at the Xiaolan Jingrui Industrial Park
The organizer of the blog "Chinese Jasmine Revolution" said
thousands of villagers were upset that the village committee
sold 12.8 acres of land to developers, without discussing it with the villagers first.
The deal was worth US$300 million.
But none of the villagers got any of the money.
For months, they've gathered at the industrial park protesting in hopes of getting their money from the committee.
Two days ago, 3,000 policemen were sent to suppress the protestors.
They beat everyone they saw
and smashed vehicles that got in their way or threw them into the river.
Villagers threw gasoline and kerosene bombs to retaliate.
Civilians・ houses and two factories were burned down.
More than 10 policemen were injured.
The police also arrested young male villagers in various houses.
This clash injured many civilians and policemen.
There's also a rumor that the village leader has died. 0:01:02.000, 0:01:04.000 Local police said this rumor was not true,
adding the incident was instigated by a small group of villagers
who persuaded the rest to riot.
Police have arrested their main suspect.
The area was restored to order as of yesterday,
but a large group of armed police are stationed in the village after dark.
