Hi guys, it's LaTisha from YoungFinances.com and today I actually have a question from
one of you guys! I'm always happy to answer questions if I
can, hopefully I can pull either from my own experience or I can research to find out the
best answer for you so feel free to contact me.
Today's question is a career type question. So, this question is from Lincoln and he says,
hey LaTisha, how are you? Oh I'm fine thanks how are you?
Ok. I'm actually in school with one last semester. I am struggling to find a career in my field,
which is finance. Oh me too!
I haven't had any internships. Can you point me in the right direction on what to do and
how to go about it?
Thanks, Lincoln
First of all Lincoln, thank you so much for your question. This is actually something
that I've had experience with because I got a degree in finance and I was out of work
for 10 months after I graduated.
I graduated May of 2010 and I had actually had internships and it was still rough and
I know right now the economy is still a little bit tough so it might be hard to find something
so I'm going to give you tips on what I did and how I secured a full time position in
my field.
The first thing that you want to do is you mentioned that you have one last semester
so what I would encourage you to do is for this last semester, try to find an internship
that you can do.
Even if it's unpaid, even if it's not through your school or through your college.
Try to get an internship.
I worked an unpaid internship with a mutual fund manager for one semester and even though
it was only one semester I took the time to learn as much as I could while I was there.
I had the opportunity to put that on my resume as work that I've done and it gives you a
chance to be in the field.
The second thing that I would suggest that you do is to make friends and keep in touch
with your professors and the head of your department.
They constantly are getting people contacting them asking them who are your best students,
we're looking for someone. So there are people out there looking for
recent graduates but your job is to make sure that you are top of mind for your professors
and for the heads of your department so that when they do get those opportunities they
will think of you.
This is something that you should have been working on, if you're a really good student
then you should have already been cultivating a relationship with your professors
but if you haven't then get on it. You still got a semester to go, you want to sit at the
front of the class, you want to be the one asking questions. You want to be there office
hours. You want them to know you, and know your face.
The third thing that I would say that you do is go to your school's career center. So
I went through my school's career center. And I was actually able to find a lot of good
jobs. So I got one interview by contacting my professor and then I got a couple of other
interviews through the career center.
The job that I have right now I actually got through my career center so there are options
out there and you also want to go to your career center because they can kinda help
you tweak your resume and because that could be what's pulling you back or not giving you
the opportunities that you want.
So you want to make sure you have a flawless resume. I actually have an e-book that I wrote
about how to create a job getting resume and you can get it at YoungFinances.com and there
should be a picture right here so you can click on it and get the book.
It's free to my newsletter subscribers. So, those are my suggestions for you Lincoln on
how to find a job in your industry. Especially since it's finance you definitely want to
make sure that you've got some sort of internship even if it's unpaid.
The second thing that you want to do is contact your professors and your department head.
Make sure that they know who you are and that you are looking for a job.
The third thing that you want to do is get in touch with your career center. Make sure
you polish that resume. Make sure that you are there for career fair events, there for
networking events. You have to have a plan of attack. This is a full assault on your
industry you need to be ready to secure that job and I know you can. Because you're reading
Young Finances so you already know about money.
So I know that you're ready to jump straight into the industry. And these tips are good
for anyone, even if you're not in the finance industry. These are good tips if you're a
recent graduate if you're looking for a job.
