I work as a...
mechanical aircraft engineer.
My apprenticeship was in aeronautical engineering...
and I'm just about to go...
and see Nick Clegg, Deputy Prime Minister...
deliver his speech around National Apprenticeship Week...
and more specially, about getting more...
girls and women involved in STEM based subjects.
I just think an event like this is so important. Firstly because it...
celebrates something which...
I think we haven't celebrated...
enough for a very very long time in our country...
which is that the value, the virtues...
the merits of vocational education...
should be championed and celebrated just as much...
as the value and the merits and the strengths of...
academic education.
It is so, so...
so important that you...
continue to do what you're doing by being here...
promoting the...
importance and value for us as a...
country of STEM subjects...
of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
No economy in the modern age...
is going to survive and thrive...
in the highly competitive...
globalised environment we operate in...
unless we have more young people, doing more...
STEM subjects and particularly...
more girls and women.
I'm going to ask you to know join me...
in welcoming Bethan who is...
one of our star apprentices.
Sometimes the most difficult thing...
being a girl is people will say to you...
"You've only got that opportunity because you're a girl...
because you're the minority."
And that's not the case.
People only give you opportunities if you deserve them.
If you believe...
you've only got it because you're a girl then...
you're not going to go that far.
You need to stay strong in yourself and say that you deserved it because...
there's nothing in my day to day job...
that I find difficult being a women.
I think an apprenticeship... that I find difficult being a women.
I think an apprenticeship...
gives you the time, it gives you the experience...
it gives you more time to learn...
actually what you're good at and where...
actually apply yourself.
