Hi! I’m Dr. Adrienne Mulligan and I am the owner of Camp Verde Veterinary Clinic and
I am here on behalf of Expert Village.com to talk to you today about caring for kittens.
When you are nursing your litter of kittens, it is going to be important to nurse them
about every 6 hours or every 4 hours so it makes it about 6 times a day and they will
let you know by getting restless and moving around and wanting to be fed. Now you can
use a powder where you can mix this with water. This is more convenient because you buy the
liquid kind it goes bad after a few days and you may not get through it all before it goes
bad. Most people prefer the powder. You mix it up and there are actually directions on
the back of it to tell you when and how to feed them. We’ve already talked a little
bit about using a bottle with different size nipples so you’ve got some choices. Some
kittens need it to be a smaller *** to be able to get it. If you have a weak kitten that is not quite
as healthy as the others, they really need to be fed about every 2 hours. So those are
going to have to need a little extra care. You should keep them in an environment that
is fairly warm about 88 degrees and 55 percent humidity but after the first week, you can
bring that down to about 75 degrees. If you are using things like a hot pad to do that
or a heating pad, you want to put it under their nesting box so they don’t get directly
on it and you want it to be to the side of it so that they can get off of it because
you don’t want them to always be stuck being on the heat or they will get too hot. You
can also use a heat lamp and again, you only want to warm part of the nesting box.
