Hello and welcome to Cupcake Addiction's Flat Top Frosting Cupcake Tutorial where I'll be
showing you how to achieve this great flat top frosting on your cupcake.
I like to use this style of frosting when I need a little bit more space to put my decorations.
It gives me a little but more room to position them and also when I need to have a nice flat
surface, if I'm concerned something like the nail polish bottle might be going to topple
over in unbalance or uneven swirl. The flat tops are great place to start for getting
a nice, even, stable base to your cupcake decorations.
Tools and equipment: I've got some of our perfectly pipeable buttercream
frosting. I've just tinted this blue today. And I've got a regular knife. You want to
make sure that you got a knife with a nice straight back edge on it whichever knife you
choose. I've also got a couple of tissues there. One
is going to be to wipe my knife on and the other one is just to clean up any edges as
we go. Let's get started.
I'm going to start by just putting blobs of icing on top. And I want to make sure I get
plenty on there. But try not to get it to the edges of the patty pan or that cupcake
case because you don't want to end up with a mess or too much to clean off at the end.
Alright, so I'm just working that knife back and forth, back and forth. But I'm making
sure to get the frosting right over the edges of the cupcake. So if you look at it from
upside down, you can see it's actually coming right over the edges of the cupcake case.
I'm going to wipe that knife off. I'm going to just smooth around the top.
Wipe it off again. And from here, I want to use the tissue or
your napkin or your tea towel. Make sure you really got a nice clean knife. And with the
back of the knife, just scrape around the side. Scrape around the side. Wipe it off.
Scrape around the side. Wipe it off. And scrape around the side. Once again, clean that knife
off and just smooth across the top your nice little swirls. This is a bit similar to the
sprinkle style swirl. I think there's a bit more dome in the middle but a definitely great
frosting technique if you really want your decorations to be the star of your cupcake.
Now, see there on the sides, having done too bad of a job in keeping it inside the patty
pan. If you do have any overlap or any spill, just neaten it up, just take a tissue, and
you'll see there it neatens up quite easily. A really easy frosting method, no tools or
equipment required at all, no piping bags and no piping nozzles. So a great way to get
a nice, neat, professional finish on your cupcakes.
