>> Islamophobia is rife and is very vast in our community now, unfortunately. In certain
areas of London it's really bad. Sisters and brothers are getting attacked left, right
and centre, just based on how they look, even regardless if they are Muslims or not.
>> Around in my area there's a lot of people who I could tell hate Muslims, and by that
they judge me for being a Muslim as well. So sometimes they can treat me unfairly, or
in school people can treat me unfairly, and I feel ashamed about that. And if I could
do something I would.
>> Yeah, I experienced it went Osama Bin Laden died, in school. They just went up to every
Muslim and said, oh, "Your uncle died!" or "Your dad died!". It's really not good for
us lot because he's a terrorist and we're not a terrorist. They should know the facts
between a terrorist and a Muslim. That made me feel really sad and it was hurting my honour.
>> Personally I think it's the demonisation in the media that is causing all of this.
>> I think that (sorry to say but) it's been exacerbated by the media somewhat, 'cause
a lot of the coverage you get in the papers and on TV will highlight negative stories
instead of highlighting what the Muslim population do that is positive for our community.
>> To be honest with you, every time I read the newspaper, about a Muslim person it's
always something bad. Why not change that? Make something good about someone Muslim or
the Muslim characters out there. There's a lot of Muslims! A lot of Muslims… personally,
I am against terrorism -- that should be brought up a lot in the newspapers. So I feel that
would help towards Islamophobia.
>> They shouldn't hate us. They should think of us equally: everybody is equal. And Islam
says that everything is equal. So they should think of us like that. They shouldn't hate
us anyway. I went somewhere for a job and that guy - I don't know what was wrong with
him -, he was saying, "how come we are allowing a Muslim? You don't know how to serve. You
can't serve properly." (blah, blah) - stuff like that. And I was so upset(!), 'cause I
am a student in this country. This is one reason, maybe, why they're not allowing us
to do very good jobs. And they say like we're Muslim and we can't do anything. It's really
too much discrimination, isn't it?
>> I'm born and bred here, I'm as British as you can get, so being a Muslim is just
my identity, really. And regardless of how long of a cloth I wear on my shoulders, at
the end of the day I like fish and chips!
