WorldCatTU is a new search tool that makes it even easier to discover library resources
at Towson University and beyond. In addition to books, WorldCatTU also lets
you search for videos, CDs, and even articles. The real power of WorldCatTU is its ability
to search both the resources available at Towson and also those owned by other libraries
around the world. Combined with the library’s Interlibrary
Loan services, the resources available to you are pretty much endless!
So let’s take a look at how it works… As you’ll notice, by default, WorldCatTU
searches both Cook Library’s collection... ...and the collections of other libraries.
Type in your search to discover what’s available. Your results appear...
...in the main area of the screen. You’ll notice that your results aren’t
just books... Each result will also indicate which libraries
own the item. By default, items available at Towson show
up first in the results. WorldCatTU will also indicate if a particular
item is available at another USMAI institution. If you want to see relevant results regardless
of whether or not it’s available at Towson... ...choose ‘Relevance only’ ...
...from the "sort by" drop-down box. This will rank your results by their relevance
to your search terms, regardless of which libraries own them.
You can also refine your search results using the categories on the left side of the screen.
For instance, if you need to find a book you can filter out all the other types of materials
by clicking the book link. Only want current materials? Click the most
current year. Interested in the business aspect of environmental
sustainability? Choose ‘business & economics’ from the available Topics.
These options make it easy and convenient to browse around and discover what resources
are available to you. Use the bread crumb trail if you need to go
back to your original search. Whether Towson has a copy or not, you’ll
need to click on the title of the resource... ...to either get its call number and location
or request it from another library. If the item is available at Towson, it will
give you the call number and collection, as well as indicate whether or not it can be
checked out. If it's available from another USMAI Library,
the record will display it’s availability. Click ‘Request Item’ to get an item from
another USMAI library. If the item isn’t held by either Towson
or another USMAI library, you can try to get it from another library through our Interlibrary
Loan service. There are several other features in WorldCatTU
that make it easy to discover and use library resources.
Many books have a preview available, so you can look at them more in-depth before deciding
if you want to get it. On the right side of the screen, you can find
materials similar in subject to what you are currently viewing.
Several options are also available for managing the resources you find as well.
WorldCatTU includes a citation feature that will automatically create a citation in the
style of your choosing and let you export it to a program like RefWorks.
You can also email, print, or save resources to a list within WorldCatTU.
And, if you’re stuck and can’t find what you need, you can ask a librarian for help
through the library’s IM system. You can access WorldCatTU from the library’s
website (cooklibrary.towson.edu)... ...or by pointing your browser...
...to towsonuniversity.worldcat.org.
