Sixty wounded warriors traveled to Nellis Air Force Base to participate in an adaptive
sports camp. Wheelchair basketball is one of the many events
featured in the Warrior Games, which are held annually and open to wounded, ill and injured
service members from each branch of the military. The mentoring role itself gives warriors a
chance to pass on what they have learned through the program.
SB: Steve Otero , Wounded Warrior Mentor: "It is really enjoyable for me to come out
here as a mentor and see new airmen, new warriors, being involved in the program and getting
to have the opportunity to have that initial feeling I had about a year ago and being able
to incorporate sports as part of an overall recovery plan."
For Steve Otero, adaptive sports have a continued positive effect on his life.
SB: Steve Otero , Wounded Warrior Mentor: " My entire outlook on my existence has changed,
I've become much more positive, I enjoy being able to participate in all the sports regardless
of whether not I'm good at them, it still puts a smile on my face every single day."
While the spirit of competition is present in any sport, building camaraderie on the
path to recovery is the Common goal for this adaptive sports camp.
