we're here today to talk about foley footsteps with foley artist Susan Fitz-Simon
Susan I understand that the majority of a foley artist's work is performing
footsteps
but what's the deal with this crazy box this is a foley pit
it's a portable foley pit on a professional stage you have them dug into
the ground
what you do is you put different materials inside you could put gravel
you could put dirt you can create grass
sound what we've done here with astroturf and some audiotape
you would use that in addition to
different surfaces on the floor like cement tiles
maybe brick here's the lid you can take the lid off and walk on the lid or put the
lid back on
and walk on it on top of the box which would give you a different tone
could you demonstrate the sound of someone walking on grass
sure we have the audio tape in here and we have some
astroturf sounds like grass and dried leaves
so different shoes and different surfaces make different sounds
so can you demonstrate some more for us sure nice big tile
so you'll hear
this has a little more of a high end that has little more of a lower and
now if I change out the shoes quick change
big difference
because this is a harder shoe it's creating a harder
sound the heavier sound so I noticed when you're walking that
it doesn't look the same way that a person normally walking looks almost
more of a
dance performance can you tell us a little about that technique sure
the key thing is you really have to get a heel and a toe I mean you're walking and you
hear a regular footstep it's a ba-dump ba-dump so you want to
so while I'm watching a screen and watching an actor walk
you know looking at their shoulders staying right in front of that microphone
it's pretty interesting you given me a lot to think about as I sit and watch people
walk
on television and on film we'll see you next time
thank you Susan Fitz-Simon thank you Buzz
