We offer a suite of Undergrad Engineering Programmes here at Sunderland; Mechanical
Engineering, Automotive Engineering and Electronic and Electrical Engineering. These are all
BEng Honours. We also offer a one-year Top-Up in Manufacturing Engineering.
Here at Sunderland we give a lot of priority to practicals.
Hands-on workshops available, on-campus and off-campus at the Industry Centre. We also
have lab facilities as well where the students can carry out experiments.
Mechanical, Electrical and Automotive- based experiments, as well as a lot of fluids and
mechanics stuff that’s just brand-new this year.
All of the programmes use design as a unifying theme. We believe that to be able to design
something effectively, you need to understand the Engineering principles behind it.
We design and race a single-seater race car every year at Silverstone and it puts us in
the spotlight for companies to look at us in a different light. It’s kind of prepared
me for what’s out there; I mean it’s a lot of team work and a lot of deadlines.
Every student here at Sunderland has the opportunity to add an extra year in there between levels
two and three, out in industry, working as an industrial professional.
We’ve interacted with companies such as Nissan, Glaxo Smith Kline, Jaguar Landrover.
Here at Sunderland we’re very proud to have our courses accredited by the IET with the
highest level of accreditation available for a BEng Undergrad degree. This means that not
only is it a great quality stamp for the way that we manage and deliver the courses here
on-campus, but also it means that graduates with some industrial experience can have their
application for CEng status fast-tracked. All of our graduates do go on to get good
jobs, both in the region, in the UK and world-wide. They can leave the Mechanical Engineering
programme and be a Design Engineer, but they can also go into different aspects of Engineering;
we had one student recently who is going into the Nuclear Industry. We also have Design
Engineers going into exciting areas such as Formula 1 Teams.
It’s pleasing to see that we have Sunderland Graduates in Industry all around the World.
I’d definitely recommend this course to other people. We get a lot of support, sort
of outside the classroom which just lets us become better Engineers.
The thing I enjoyed most was mainly the lecturers; they were always there to help out, and if
you needed anything they had an open-door policy and you could go and talk to them at
any time. I would recommend this to other people because
it gives you a much deeper look into vehicles, especially with the Automotive Engineering.
I’d describe the course as Active, Dynamic and Growing.
Interesting, Hands-On and Motivating. Supportive, Caring and Always There.
Enjoyable, Tough and Rewarding.
