JOEL SIEGEL: You also have the last element of the brush is this hard metal part. This
is what expands and contracts the wires that are protected in the rubber case. This is
just one more tool in your kit. You can use it to hit the snare, the cymbal or the hi-hat.
This is probably my favorite application. It really comes in handy when you're doing
more ambient and kinda jazz-related work. This is the cymbal spirit. You can do it at
any direction you like. Usually the best sound you're going to elicit is starting in at the
bell and going out, in towards you, but out as far as the cymbal goes. Here's what it
sounds like. You can also use this part of the brush to get some harsher attack if you
just kinda need it every once in a while. Same for that sweet-ride spot. Don't be afraid
of using all the parts of whatever the stick or brush or rod that you're using.
