I mean I want y'all to remember me as a player here but for everybody in here
that's one thing that you can take away from me is that you know you can't blame
it on yourself you got to look at you sometimes you got to dig deep and ask
yourself what are you doing and if I you know if I just if y'all remember
anything from me just remember those words if you're going through a hard
time just dig deep and say what am i doing to help myself who is Joel Berry II

Carolina Tar Heels his parents are Joel senior and Kathie
Barry they have five children all together when Joel Berry ii was six
years old his father operated a recreation center and one day Barry was
helping him he dropped what he was doing and started scrimmaging against his
older sisters and other kids little Barry told his parents that he wanted to
play with the big boys and that's when Joe Barry senior found
out he had himself a ball player 5/7 Joel was playing with nine and under
competition when he was nine he played with 11 and under by 13 Joel was playing
with a high-powered Nike sponsor AAU team out of Florida in middle school he
made the decision that he wanted to play for the University of North Carolina let
me say that one more time for the folks out there who don't understand what I
just said in middle school he made the decision
that he wanted to play for the University of
North Carolina such a tough decision at a young age anyway his father favorite
Duke while his mother always knew that her son will play for the Tar Heels
they wanted their son to be academically prepared so they decided to enroll him
in Lake Highland prep Berry led Highland to two state championships and
was the first player named Mr. Florida three times he was named Parade and
McDonald's All-American he also won Gatorade Player of the Year three times
and is just the sixth player in any state to do that he was also named King
of The Court 4A Player of the Year and first team All-State by Florida
Association of Basketball Coaches Barry was named tournament MVP as a senior
when he averaged 22 points 6 rebounds 5 assists and 2 steals and 5 games and his
prep career he averaged 21 points 6 rebounds 3 assists and 2 steals he was
invited to play in the Jordan Brand Classic but didn't play due to injury in
2012 Joel Barry earned the gold medal on the USA's U-17 team in Lithuania 2013 he
won the Nike Peach Jam and in 2014 he earned Third Team All-America honors from
MaxPreps he took only one of his college visits and his first and only choice
North Carolina Barry's freshman year was hampered by injuries he average four
points a game while backing up junior point guard Marcus Paige he recently
came out senior night and said he used to place the blame for him not receiving
any playing time on the coaching staff right he wasn't really looking at
himself so he said he was calling his mother over the summer and she gave him
a real quick reality check she said what are you
doing to make them want to play you hmmm-hmmm sophomore year he gets the
start and Marcus Paige moves over to the shooting guard position increasing Joel
Berry's playing time sophomore season Joel Berry becomes just only the sixth Tar
Heel to earn ACC tournament MVP and all Final Four honors in the same
year he started in 39 games all except senior night Barry led the team in
assists with 151 on a year three-point percentage 38% free-throw percentage 86%
and in steals 58 on the year he was second on the team in scoring averaging
12 points per game second on the team with 9 defensive player of the game award his
free-throw percentage of 86% was the seventh defensive UNC in history he also
had the fewest turnovers in a season by UNC starting point guard 1.5 Joel Barry II
becomes the 18th Tar Heel to win and the second point guard in UNC
history to win the Most Valuable Player award
he is the first sophomer in UNC history to win the award he averaged 17 points
over three games span and a game high of 19 vs. Virginia in ACC championship game
he went 4 for 4 from the free-throw line to clutch UNC the title 2016 NCAA
Tournament Berry average 13 points in six games with 30 assists total he had 20
points in the national championship game versus Villanova he made all four of his
three-point attempts which was the second best performance in championship
game history North Carolina did lose that game 77 to 74 junior season Joel the
second was second leading scorer averaging 14 points per game he led and
assists with 138 on the season three-point percentage 38% and in steals
53 on the year he was second on a team and three pointers made 88 Barry and
Justin Jackson combined for 193 three-pointers which is the
single-season school record for most three-pointers by two players he scored
in double figures 28 times with 20 or more points 10 times he was most valuable
player at a tournament I'm just gonna say MJ invitational Berry averaged 18
points four rebounds three assists and two steals
moving on to the 2017 ACC tournament they lose to Duke but
before the 2017 NCAA tournament he enters his ankle on another teammates
foot during practice and during the first half of the UK game he injures his
other ankle on the drive to the basket now that sucked so basically you're
playing a whole tournament with two injured ankles Barry played throughout the
NCAA tournament on two sprained ankles which affected his performance shooting
the ball and driving to the basket regardless he earned MOP honors at
the Final Four after scoring a game-high 22 points with the team high of six assists
balllin in the championship game win over Gonzaga he becomes the seventh
player to score twenty or more in consecutive title games he becomes the
fifth point guard to earn Final Four MOP honors and the first UNC point guard
