Hello, I am Velislava Petrova and I am a PhD student in immunology at the University of Cambridge.
I, too, unequivocally support the initiative of the Bulgarian student club at Cambridge, an initiative called Bulgaria for Bokova.
As a Bulgarian student who is involved in science and who works predominantly in an international environment,
my reasons for supporting Mrs Irina Bokova are based not on political sympathies,
but rather on my personal observations on her work on initiatives and ideas, for which I stand, too
and these are, in particular, the rights and equality of women in politics and in science,
the preservation of cultural heritage,
and the development of the scientific and technological potential of countries like Bulgaria, which have a low economic profile.
These are initiatives and ideas that unite and overcome political and ideological differences
in the name of building stronger international ties.
Precisely because of these initiatives and ideas, Mrs Bokova is one of the strongest contenders for the position of Secretary-General of the UN.
Even though there is strong international support for her, the lack of a clear political position on her candidacy on the part of Bulgaria looks like political suicide.
It is sad and pitiful to see how, yet again, Bulgaria plays its own executioner,
refusing to clearly state its nationality and to overcome its political sympathies.
For this reason, I urge each and every Bulgarian with a clear active citizenship to acquaint themselves with the work of Mrs Irina Bokova
and to show their support by becoming part of the Bulgaria for Bokova initiative.
I hope that this time we can be united and that together we can believe in Bulgaria’s better future,
which, this time, lies solely in our own hands.
Thank you.
