Hey, if you wanna create harmony in your home, it's all in the details. They say an eco-friendly
house can't be built in 150 days for $150,000, and I say it can. I'm Allen Smith. Join me
as I push the limits with time, budget and creativity with the Garden Home Challenge,
exclusively on eHow Home. You know, when you're workin' on a house, what I discovered is some
of the most challenging issues that you have to deal with, some of the most challenging
questions, come when you have to resolve a transition: Like from this side to this side
of a room, and you've got this entryway that has to be dealt with, with some kind of trim.
And what we have here, in this case, is that our cabinetry is coming very close to this,
so if I decided that I wanted to put a piece of 6 inch trim over here, and I wanted to
put a piece of 6 inch trim over here, you can see that I'm clearly about 2 inches off.
So what we gotta do is we gotta figure out how we're gonna wrap this and trim this out.
And probably what we're gonna do is add one more 2x4 here, and then I'll be able to use
my 6 inch trim board all the way around on the inside here in the kitchen and out here
in this living space. Now, come here to the front-- I just wanna show you in this entry
hall what's going on. So earlier today, Tony started on the resolution of this space. And
in a moment, I'm gonna step outside and show you how this is an echo. But for now, I just
wanna show you that we have a board here, which is the board that is the transition
between this pine wall --horizontal pine boards-- and this wall over here with your burlap.
We're gonna have a trim board here, and then we're gonna have a framing board that'll go
all the way around this side of the room, which will be the same as what you're seeing
here. Now, he's just applied these boards, so we've got a 6 inch board here that goes
up to an 8 inch board there. You can see, it notches out just about a half an inch all
the way across over to there. And then, when you come down to this point here, what I'm
gonna do is I'm gonna let this sit on a block, because we're gonna have a baseboard that's
gonna run 8 inches all the way around here, and this will actually sit on that baseboard,
and it will have a little bit of a block. And that's exactly what we did out at the
front door. So let's step out there-- let me show you that these simple repeats of patterns
in a house give you a sense of harmony. So if you look out here, the exterior door surround--
we a used a block here at the base, a wide board as the vertical, and then the horizontal
above the transom, you see, is even taller. So here we used 8 inch, and up there we used
10 inch board. And notice how it's hanging off just a little bit, just like we're doing
on the inside hallway. So this is being repeated into this room. Now, a lot of people have
come through here and said: What are you gonna do with that beautiful pine? You're not gonna
paint it, are ya? Yes, I'm gonna paint, because it's gonna make these rooms feel so much larger.
