[K. Elliott] Hi. I'm Kady Elliott, your host
for the February 18th edition of IUPUI's The Spot.
The celebration of IUPUI's forty years of excellence continues. Over $30,000 of speaker
funds has been donated to 17 different organizations. The steering committee is now
accepting the second round of proposals. Applications are due by March 31st. For a
complete list of guidelines visit the "speakers fund" tab at forty.iupui.edu.
Lead IUPUI is here to help you develop your leadership identity. This relatively new
program provides many workshops throughout the semester that will cater to your area of
leadership development. The Spot spoke with Tina Samuel Powellson, Assistant Director of Civic
Leadership, for more information. [T. Powellson] Today we're here to talk to you
about Lead IUPUI. It's a program that started at IUPUI in 2007. We've got about 15 programs
within Lead IUPUI: a variety of different opportunities from workshops to conferences to
speakers and even a newsletter. So check out our web site and you can see everything that you can
get involved with. [B. Trees] There's three goals of Lead IUPUI.
One is to develop their leadership skills now and in their careers. Two is to develop a
leadership identify. They can find out who they are and how they are most successful as a leader.
Three is to connect IUPUI students to each other and to the Indianapolis community.
[T. Powellson] Some of our upcoming workshops that we have are the cultural leadership lunches
. This month we're focusing on African American student population. We also have Leadership
Journeys with Dr. Regina Turner and also an advanced leader's seminar on creating change.
So check out our web site at lead.iupui.edu for more opportunities. Thanks!
[K. Elliott] Is your student organization in need of more flyers? We have good news for you!
The Multimedia Production Center will be giving away 100 free prints this week. To claim them,
just be the first organization to tell Nathan Mugg you watched this ad on The Spot.
University College celebrates 10 years, and you are invited! Scott Evenbeck, Dean of University
College, told us more about the celebration. [S. Evenbeck] This year we're celebrating our
10th anniversary, which is an exciting time for us and University College, and, I think, IUPUI
in general. It's the most important time. It's the first year, the first semester, and
it's really the first three weeks of class, so we're putting a lot of attention on
orientation programs, bridge programs, learning communities, partnering with math for the Math
Assistance Center, work across the curriculum to try to help students be more successful. In
celebration of the 10th anniversary we're also celebrating IUPUI's 40th anniversary, and the
birthday of the Multicultural Center. On February 25th we have celebration from 3-5
, and we've commissioned a sculpture of Dr. Taylor by a graduate of Herron. Mrs. Taylor and
the family will unveil that sculpture that day, which will be a permanent of reminder of him in
a place of honor. [K. Elliott] The reception will be on February
25th from 3-5pm in Taylor Hall. Interested in learning more about
communications? Dr. Roger Smitter, Executive Director of the National Communication
Association, will be here at IUPUI for poster presentations and to participate in breakout
sessions. Dr. Smitter will be here Friday, February 20th, in Cavanaugh Hall Room 508 from
12-2pm. We have a busy weekend in sports. The Summi
t League Championships for the men and women's swim teams will be held this weekend February
19-21 in Rochester, Michigan. And you can cheer on the Jaguars softball team as their season
begins. The ladies participate in the 6th Annual Georgia Softball Classic the weekend of February
20th-22nd. Be sure to check out their progress at iupuijags.com.
That's it for The Spot this week! Check us out next Wednesday for the latest campus news and
student activities at jagtv.iupui.edu. I'm Kady Elliott, and thanks for Spotting u
