Hi, this is Elise McMahon with Expert Village.com and in this video series we are talking about
taking a dog for a walk. If you would like to find out more about my services, you can
visit my website at www.canineheadstart.com. So, what we are going to talk about now, I
have got the dog leash and collar, and we are going to talk about leaving a gate, a
door, this could be leaving a yard, or it could be leaving your house. And what you
want is you want your dog to learn to wait to go out until you have gone out. You don’t
want to ever be in the position where you are opening a door or a gate and the dog runs
out in front of you. One thing is your dog might not be leashed, you might not have control
of your leash, and it could just be that a child from the neighborhood ?becomes nervous?.
So, you want the dog to understand that they have to wait to come out. This is how you
get this across to the dog, so I am going to approach the gate, Ty, let’s go, and
I am going to tell the dog to wait. Ty, wait. I am going to open the gate, wait, and if
the dog starts to come out, I pull him back and I close the gate. Ty, wait. I repeat the
command. Wait. Wait. Once the dog is waiting with the gate open, then I can give him the
release. Okay, let’s go. Good boy. With that you are starting off your walk with a
little bit of control and the dog knows you are actually going for a walk with him rather
than him taking you for a walk.
