hi there and welcome to the frozen sports car edition of head-to-head this
is the Mercedes AMG GTS
and it is our 2015 motor trend best driver's car this is the Jaguar F-Type Coupe R
and when it competed in 2014 it came in ninth place out of 10 cars know the f-type is a
great sports car it's got a 550 horsepower v8 sexy good look like an exhaust that sounds like
hell has opened up and its pissed off at you but I had one big flaw near comical oversteer
the rear end was more like a slip and slide than two sticky tires it was just an
uncontrollable car Jaguar think they have a solution for 2000
and 16 if you get a f-type with a v8 it now comes with all wheel drive why
traction they want to be able to put all that power to the pavement
this means that the f-type is good enough to take on it and maybe our best
driver's car
is only one way to find out
when it comes to sports cars the way they look is almost as important as the
way to go take a second to talk about the design of these two jaguar has a
long history of building the best looking cars in the world and then over
time letting them get uglier and uglier think about the 1961 series 1 e-type
that car took the world's breath away in many still consider it to be the best
looking car of all time then think about the series 3 e type in 1974 and then in
1975 you had the XJS with those flying buttresses that car was deeply sexy contrast that
to the bloated *** in 1996 and you see what I'm talking about the f-type when it came
out couple years ago was stunning just a very nice Ian Callum designed sports car
but they're already messing around with it look at the front in they've
added this kind of fo little split here with the same color as the rest of
the car and then you've got this like deep air damn thing which just looks
like a neck beard or soul patch this can take your eyes off it they've also put
heat extractors on top of the hood which while their functional I just don't think they look that
good you come around here to the side you can see these very aggressive seals they
put underneath the rocker panels in the running board didn't think of it as a
sports car you want curve you wanted to curve under instead this is like a plan
for the statue would sit on it just has the effect of adding more visual weight
making the car look thicker and heavier and then we come to i think is the best
looking part of the f-type the rear end in fact count old is one time at the
rear is the only place left for designers have any freedom why because
of safety standards and pedestrian safety laws the front the sides the
designs are dictated but look what they've done they've added this body
coloured diffuser and again like the site still it just makes the car look
taller and thicker and fatter and that's not what
you want with a sports car
looking at the front of the AMG you can see what Gord Wagner and his team did
they took classic mercedes design DNA and by that I mean of course the
1954 300 SL and they modernized it with mercedes contemporary design
language and what I mean by that is it still a German car that doesn't look
like a fist I mentioned the e-type and like the e-type this car is extremely
*** because of its large dash to axle ratio when I mean by that is the
space from the steering wheel to about the center of the front wheels whatever
reason the longer that is our brains interpreted as sporting also unlike the F type
of those silly sills this car
curves underneath making it look more trim and athletic and now we come to the
AMG's piece de resistance its big rear end I love it I've heard a lot of looks
like a Porsche 928 to HSA oh look like one of the greatest sports car designs
of all time
awesome the other thing I like about the AMG when you're inside of it you just know
the car is longer lower and wider than everything else on the road and that's
how a sports car should feel
in terms of design winner they're both good looking cars but I'm really give
the nod to the AMG because I think it's a more athletic and classic sports car

we know the AMG GTS is our best driver's car why is it our best driver's car because it's fantastic
powers fantastic the steering is fantastic the rides fantastic the grips fantastic the breaks are fantastic the engine fantastic it's a great driving
car some might say the best
the engine gotta talk about that the new four liter twin-turbo V8 in this application makes
503 horsepower about 483 pound of torque so it makes as much power as the old 6.2 liter v8
the transmission in this thing is actually a transaxle like the Corvette rear pumpkin and gear box is one unit and seven-speed dual-clutch
the same seven-speed dual-clutch that you had in the old SLS only this one is really
quick works great when it's in Race mode is one of the fastest shifting
transmissions on earth
transforms the car
the engines louder the shifts are crisper the steering feels better
the rides better it's such a monster in race mode
does it sound as good no but man is it close listen to this a twin turbo it's just awesome the engine is
entirely within the wheelbase we call it a front mid enginge give a pull moment of inertia meaning
the car doesn't want to spin so that's why such a big car handle so well and
one of the many reasons why handle so well
I was lucky enough to take this car on a eighteen hundred mile road trip around California and it was
awesome one of the reasons the cars being great that we're on these
wonderful california desert highways lots of straights fast sweepers the car can cruise a buck 20
all day and not care it's a wonderful combination
Gt and a Grand Tour a real honest-to-goodness sports car I gotta
say I always liked the going but it wasn't right the handling wasn't
there are 0 comments to me like how does this thing ever leave the factories such
a mess and she has really achieve something here and I think it's gonna be
hard for the f-type to beat

twenty miles an hour faster does that matter I don't know I might be having a
little bit more fun on this one
all-wheel drive now but it will still oversee its trailer and it helps this
thing it's sixty miles an hour a day and she allegedly 3.5 seconds to what I love
most about this system is that I can do very careful of spinning because the
all-wheel-drive it solves you can't do pretty much any more but my God does it
solve it and it's credible
a little bit intoxicated from this it happens with modern Jaguar Land Rover
products it just takes over there's nothing you can do about it
couple sore spots on this time the transmission ZF eight-speed automatic
car in the world with an eight-speed it's good for an automatic dual clutch
rapid fire up shares of those are just awesome townships you get with the AMG
electronically assisted power steering this is pretty good is it as good as he

incredible hydraulic system but this really good at this is up there towards
the top of the heap boy I gotta tell ya I was thinking she was gonna wipe the
floor with Jaguar that's just not the case for 2016 although drive system has

if you like oversteer Jaguars are your car because everyone I've ever driven

Randy what's surprising is the first car that makes me
I want to buy one here's the amazing part is that we know that despite having
less horsepower and less towards rear wheel drive only this sucker is over
three seconds

to two things really far superior braking and men's speed to explain the
braking to me was so much better but the brakes on that when you go to the panel
there's very little travel and there's a lot of immediately good stability and
just tremendous amount of grip and it makes it possible for me to go a lot

I was looking at the data and we notice through two
and nine you're breaking much later in this car and then your speed that corner
was much higher and that was the real difference in the lap times that's what
men speed is all about he talked about that in racing is the slowest you go in
a corner the Jaguar because it has a lot more understeer in the middle of a
corner has to slow down more I have to slow it down to get the thing to point
doesn't want to turn in the middle of a corner where the AMG is much better
