DACP (De l'Autre Côté du Périph')
ROK'N'PROD
present
a film by Rokhaya Diallo
March for Equality and Against Racism
The Marches for Freedom
My name is Rokhaya Diallo
I'm an activist engaged in issues of racism and sexism
and I'm the co-founder of the association "les Indivisibles"
I am also a journalist working with various media
as well as the presenter and co-author of the program "Egaux mais pas trop" ["Equal but not too much"]
I am in "la matinale" on Canal + and I work a lot on issues of equality
I'm in front of you today to tell you about a film project I started shooting
For me, for anti-racists, as well as in French and American collective memories
2013 is an extremely important year
Why? Because the first anti-racist march took place in France in 1983
The march started in Marseille with 34 people and reached Paris with 100,000 people
It lasted from October to December 1983
And in 1963 in Washington, D.C., Martin Luther King launched his most famous march
which culminated in his "I Have a Dream" speech
I'm bringing up these two dates because I want to interrogate these two collective memories
We are indeed different from the United States in many ways, and yet we also have many things in common
this afternoon in Paris, the first day, in Marseille, there were exactly 32 people
2013: Celebrating both the 50th and the 30th anniversaries of these two major Marches for Equality
I have decided to follow a group of young Americans who had the chance to come to France last May to discover France through issues of equality
They had the opportunity to meet our Justice Minister Christiane Taubira
the Vice President of the Senate Bariza Chiari
and the first lady, Valérie Trierweiler under the gildings of the Elysée Palace
They also went to Clichy-sous-Bois, though, which is where the 2005 uprising started
and they met young people in Cergy in the outer suburbs of Paris
They discovered that these great Republican gildings are as emblematic of France as the hoods and projects
The Marches for Freedom are two marches
the Washington March, and the March for Equality and Against Racism that took place in Paris and Marseille in France
I am asking you to take up this challenge
We have very little time - one month - to raise the 15,000 euros that will allow our team to go to the U.S.
and film this group of young Americans who took an interest in France
They will give us their take on the problems we are facing in France
This 52-minute documentary will be a new tool with which to question France
This project is time-sensitive
We need to start shooting no later than August 24
to simply hop on board and be part of this adventure
This is an opportunity for you to actually contribute to the existence of a film
A national broadcaster is ready to support us
but unfortunately cannot release the funds we need until next season
This is why today, given the timeframe that we have, I need your support
The idea is to contribute the amount you wish through KissKissBankBank
What you will get in return is detailed on the website
This is also a way for you to simply hop on board with us, to participate in the film
to participate in the film, and to follow the making of the film step by step
This is also an opportunity for us to meet, as we will probably have many opportunities to discuss the film
and it is an opportunity for you to attend screenings as well as the film's premiere, of course
This film gives us an opportunity to say things
and to examine and question the France in which we live through a comparison with the United States
Thank you so much
I am really grateful to you for taking the time to learn about this project
It is close to my heart as well as to the heart of many people
I would like to add that the film will be produced by a company called "De l'Autre Côté du Périph' " [Beyond the Ring Road]
Its name, I think, says it all
Thank you for making a contribution and for spreading the word to your friends, family members, loved ones, and colleagues
I really hope we have the opportunity to meet at the end of this adventure
I'm sure it will be quite an adventure, and a very exciting one too!
