complex vocabulary so you improve your English understanding.
Today our headline is: Spanish recession deepens in fourth quarter.
Our article is from Reuters and may be found at the web address below.
This article is a regular, factual news item.
Now let's deconstruct the headline.
As a backgrounder, it it helpful to know Spain has had tough economic times for a a long
time now.
A recession is a term used to describe an economy. A bad or good economy?
Well, a bad economy. A recession is 2 quarters of negative economic growth.
The second item is the phrase "deepens."
Is this a positive or negative word?
Well, "to deepen" means normally "to get deeper" orin our case "to get worse."
So let's review the two terms today from our headline.
"Recession" -- a bad economy."
Thus, our headline "Spanish recession deepens in fourth quarter" could be rewritten: Bad
Spanish economy gets worse in fourth quarter."
