Hello. I am Joan Borja and in this video I will talk to you about the status of Catalan in Vives Network universities.
I have structured the information into six parts.
The first part is on the Vives University Network: a group of multilingual universities.
The second part is on the legal framework of Catalan and other languages of the Vives Network.
In third place, I will talk about the use of Catalan in administration.
Fourthly, the use of Catalan in teaching.
The fifth part will be on the use of Catalan in research.
And finally the university linguistic services.
The universities of the Vives Network are multilingual as the majority of the members speak two or more languages,
because there are a lot of students that take part in international exchange programmes,
and because they make up an open network to the Mediterranean, to the world and to the different languages and cultures.
We recommend that, during your university studies, you are in contact
with the maximum amount of languages possible, as this will enrich your spirit and, most of all,
it will help you for your professional future.
With regards to the legal status of Catalan in the Vives universities, we can find the following:
In the University of Sassari (in Italy) and University of Perpignan via Domitia (in France)
the official languages are, respectively, Italian and French.
Catalan is not an official language, even though some members speak it
and use it for their work in the Vives Network.
The University of Perpignan teaches the Degree in Catalan Studies and a Master’s in Catalan Studies.
At the University of Andorra, Catalan is the main language.
In the case of the universities of the Vives Network that are in Spain,
most of them establish in the statues that Catalan is the main language
and, therefore, it has a normal use in activities.
Spanish is also official, obviously, and it is also present.
Taking this consideration into account, the information that we comment on in this video
from this point in, will refer to the universities of Andorra and in Spain. 28 00:02:36,820 --> 00:02:40,785 Both in Andorra and in Spain, the universities of the Vives Network
normally use Catalan in administration.
This means that administrative documents and the use of the users is available in Catalan,
and you can be attended to in Catalan wherever you go.
In the case of Andorra and the Catalan universities,
the Spanish version of documents is also available to users (and in other languages).
In the case of Valencian universities,
the majority offer bilingual documentation in Catalan and Spanish.
We should mention that, as well as Catalan and Spanish, these universities
also use English as a working language, for example in the institutional information on the web pages.
And, finally, we obviously motivate you to use Catalan in the university administration.
We will dedicate this part to see which languages are used in teaching.
Have a look at this graph where you can see the percentage of languages
used in teaching degrees at the main universities of the Vives Network.
The average of classes taught in Catalan in degrees at Vives Network universities,
in which Catalan is an official language, is over 60%.
It varies between 100% at the University of Andorra or 94.3% at the University of Rovira i Virgili,
which have a higher number of classes in Catalan,
And 7.8% at the University of Alicante or a practically token presence of Catalan
at the Miguel Hernández University of Elche.
In many universities there are certain subjects that are taught in various languages,
in different groups, but there are also subjects that can only be taken in one language.
The Universities of the Network have an explicit use of the languages used
in university teaching in degrees, Master’s, PhDs and also other academic activities,
so that you can know before which languages are used in the classes.
In all the Vives Network universities you can do
theses and final projects in Catalan.
Also, there are linguistic services that offer support to correct any text in the field of research,
And, also, you can opt for grants in the majority of universities offer each year for this purpose.
The majority of the Network universities
have language services available that offer courses or linguistic partners
to learn or improve Catalan and other languages.
These linguistic services also support multilingual teaching
by correcting and translating the teaching material as well as giving advice.
Finally, one of the other most highlighted elements of the work of the linguistic services is to support
the dissemination of cultural activities for example cinema, theatre, music and conferences. 64 00:06:06,212 --> 00:06:11,043 We recommend that you use the linguistic service at your university,
because it can offer you great help to learn and improve your Catalan and other languages.
What they say about university spirit is also done with words.
Use Catalan “if you want” at your university.
