Hello Everyone, and welcome to my first Top Ten List. As I mentioned, I'm paying my homage
to the Pokemon fandom in celebration of the long anticipated Pokemon X and Y.
Pokemon has been something I've had my entire life. From the moment it came out to us in
America, I was hooked, but I never had the Game Boy console, so I fell in love with the
Pokemon card game, thanks to my friends. Fond memories of learning the game during a cold
December day still stay with me even to this day, but none was more exhilarating when I
was finally able to play my own game. Mind you, I had friends who had ROM versions, so
my first Pokemon game was on the computer rather than the game systems itself, though
later I would go out and get a copy of Pokemon Blue for myself. However, my first game was
Pokemon Yellow, and those were equally fond memories, but I'm not going to delve on those
long forgotten years.
Today, I bring you my top favorite Pokemon, and do forgive me if you notice only the first
3 generations of Pokemon. I fell out of the Pokemon fandom around the time Diamond and
Pearl came out and since I stopped playing the card game as well as the video games,
I really have no favorites because I wasn't able to experience them first hand. Though
I do have a few favorites based on aesthetics, that alone was is not enough to get a spot
on this list
So, let's get started.
This one was a tie for the simple reason that of the Eeveelutions, these two are will always
be my favorites, and for different reasons. Vaporeon fought with me in Generation 1, and
Umbreon fought with me in Generation 2. Why do I like them? Simple, Water and Dark are
my two favorite types, followed closely by ghost, dragon, and ice. On top of that, both
Vaporeon and Umbreon are powerhouses, Vaporeon having the highest HP and Umbreon the highest
defense. Many people were pretty skeptical about Umbreon simply because of Dark type
being pretty strange in generation 2, but I still enjoyed it enough to give it a try,
and sadly when I was given the choice to finally evolve my Eevee, Umbreon was always my first
choice simply because of the wide variety of moves it was able to learn. Ah well, I
still hold you close Vaporeon...just remember that.
This pint size pee-wee is my favorite because of two reasons. One, he was a fun addition
to my water deck, and two, me and my mudkip had a strong bond in Pokemon Sapphire. He
was the second highest level Pokemon in my team towards the end of my enjoyment, and
he was always in my party. Though at that point his evolved point, I still remember
the fond memories of the little mud fish prancing around with me, being his hardy little self.
So why is he so low on my list....I dunno...Do you like mud kips?
Haunter was my first Ghost Pokemon. My favorite as well. While I likely would have put Gengar
on my lost, it occurred to me that because of the trading rule back in the early days,
I never had a Gengar. So Haunter, being a fond Pokemon I picked up in Lavender town,
remained in my party and served me well up until I just stopped playing the game. Sorry
Haunter, at least you had a memorable part in the anime.
This little psychic Pokemon shares a bit of a different story. Back in the day, when I
was going through a tough time in my life, I had a nasty ear infection that kept me from
school and work for nearly a week. Most of the time I was utterly miserable and stayed
in bed because my entire head hurt. So when I was awake, I played Pokemon XD Gale, and
before I beat the game, my power house pokemon was Kirlia that I had captured. However, in
trying to relive the fond memories, playing Pokemon Sapphire, I caught Kirlia, only to
be utterly frustrated by the lack of moves it would learn that suited my more offensive
style of fighting.
Sableye holds a new light to me. As mentioned previously, I started a new file of Pokemon
Sapphire so I could replay my favorite of the games. In doing so, my party started with
Mudkip and came to an end when I caught Sableye. What do I love so much about this Pokemon?
Well he's a ghost type, and incredibly powerful for one so early in the game. Literally only
at the 2nd or 3rd gym, there it was along side an Aron. Both great Pokemon for early
gamers, and Sabeley's move pool turned out to be the stuff of legends. Alongside my Mudkip,
this fun ghosty has been dominating the battlefield
This beautiful beasty holds a bit of a different story with me. I was never able to get a Miltoc
in Pokemon Sapphire, primarily because no matter how hard I tried, Carvanah would troll
me every time I searched for Miltoc's previous form, Feebas. The reason this Pokemon is so
dear to my heart is because of the Trading Card Game. Up until the place I played went
out of business because of the decline in Pokemon's popularity, My water deck was top
notch. When the third generation had been introduced, Febas and Miltoc had been introduced
into my deck, the card itself one of my few powerhouses that dominated the playing field
when I could get it out. I still have the card, still have the deck. I've thought about
playing again, but who could possibly hold up to the new cards? Oh well, I'll let Nostalgia
remain.
Flygon was another Pokemon I had fond memories of while playing through Sapphire the first
time. Trapninch was a pain to catch, and I remember spending hours trying to catch one,
and then hours more trying to train up to Vibrava. Flygon was one of those Pokemon you
felt completely satisfied to get and boy did I. A dragon ground type, Flygon's special
power, levitate, made him immune to most ground type attacks and with my Swampert, the two
were unstoppable in Electric and Ground battles. My Flygon will be missed, but it will always
hold a special place in my heart
Since I started with Pokemon Yellow, I had no choice but to take Pikachu as my starter
Pokemon. That was well and dandy when you got to Misty and other Pokemon trainers, but
as someone who wasn't fond of the electric mouse, I needed a winner in my team. A Male
Nidoran was the choice as back in the day, Nidoking was my top Pokemon. However, I say
Nidorino because Nidoking was hard to get and you didn't get a moon stone until much
later in the game. On top of that, upon reaching a certain level, Nidoran Male or Nidorino
(I can't remember which) learned a move that could take on Brock's team with ease. Thus,
this made him an effective Pokemon to start with. Entirely wonderful, and with Nidorino
an original party holder, I will always be fond of the poison rabbit thingy.....
The only Legendary I truly love, Kyogre is my favorite for many reasons. For one thing,
it's appearance and design base is around the Orca, my favorite animal. Kyogre is king
of the sea and thus his design as an orca just makes him seem all the best. My second
reason is it's diverse abilities within Sapphire. When I first caught the dolphin like beast,
His moves weren't terribly impressive. With some work however, I had my Kyogre knowing
two water attacks, an ice attack, and...get this, an electric attack. I was baffled a
pure water type could learn the move, but I was pleasantly surprised and thus Kyogre
became my highest level Pokemon in Sapphire.
On top of all that, Kyogre was in my Pokemon deck as my first ever EX card that I obtained
with a little good luck charm. Proud of what I had, I put him in my deck and he's been
the king ever sense.
So, in all essence, Kyogre is my all time favorite, however, there is one Pokemon I
will consider on equal footing....flippering, with him
An unexpected Pokemon, again, this little guy has a lot of fond memories. For one, he
was my Johto starter as well as one of my favorite water types up until the Orca legendary
came around. Totodile, to this day still has a high stat in offense, and it shows in many
of the Pokemon's move pools and given moves on his Pokemon cards. Shockingly, Totodile
was also a star player in my decks, and his evolutions of both Feraligator and Dark Feraligator
were featured. However the real reason Totodile beats out
my favorite is my adventures with the little crocodile in Pokemon Mystery Dungeon.
When I took the personality test with Blue Team, I was put as a Totodile, fine by me
as I loved the little guy and was eager to start the game. However, as time would prove,
I grew more attached to the blue Pokemon as myself and Charmander advanced on.
But in January of 2007, an ice storm hit us and left me without power for the majority
of two weeks. All I had to entertain myself was Pokemon Mystery Dungeon. It was a pretty
rough time, with tree limbs crashing down in the night and it being incredibly cold
no matter where I went. But when I turned on that Nintendo DS and shared the adventure's
of Totodile to unwrap his mystery, none of that mattered. And together, the two of us
climbed to Sky Tower and beat the legendary Pokemon residing there, and it was an exhausting
adventure.
When I finished the game for the night, my DS died, and the next day, the power company
had fixed the lines. I felt that the journey was something we both underwent together and
in the end we both had happy endings. So it may sound cheesy, but that is the reason Totodile
is my favorite Pokemon
Thanks for watching everyone, and do enjoy the rest of your October as well as the release
of Pokemon X and Y (If you're getting the game of course.)
