I have always made it my practice to practise my Japanese every day
If you want to get good at English fast I recommend you practice the same advice and
practise your English everyday too
In today's video we're going to look at two tricky words that often cause a lot of confusion
practice and practise
People who are used to American English may not even realize that these are two different
words
because in American English they are both spelled practice
with a "C"
practise is a verb
It means to do something repeatedly in order to get better at it
For example
I practise English everyday
of course means I repeatedly do English every day in order to get better at English
I practise English everyday
he needs to practise his handwriting more
of course means he needs to do more handwriting again and again and again in order to make
his handwriting better
he needs to practise his handwriting more
Practice is a noun
It means to the habit of doing something or the application or use of an idea, belief
or method
For example:
In the 1950's the Audio-lingual method was common practice
now this means that in the 1950's the audio-lingual method to learning English was a commonly
used method.
It was common practice
He makes a practice of always being punctual
now this means he always makes it is habit to be punctual
punctual of course means on time
he makes a practice of always being punctual
so in summary practise is a verb and practice is a noun
now the pronunciation of these two words is exactly the same so you only have to worry
about this difference when it comes to spelling
of course I have kept this explanation fairly simple to make this lesson easy to understand
for a more comprehensive overview of these two tricky English words I recommend you check
them in a dictionary
I'll leave links to a good dictionary where you can read about both of these words in
the description below this video so be sure to check that
so that is the end of today's lesson
