Dr. Massry on Dr.90210 _ Video 2 - Part 1 This one is looking good.
My name is Landon, Iím 17 years old. Iím going to see Dr. Cassileth and Dr. Massry
to repair the damage done to my eye. I think we did good picking the Vegas.
Las Vegas is good. Some people are not happy with it.
It looks good. Today is my first prom. Iím really excited
and weíve been setting up for it for a while. We got to go find some more of those leaves.
Yeah. Letís go walk around the swamp with all the snakes and stuff and letís find some.
Johnny, weíll leave that up to you. New yearís eve 2004, a bunch of my friends
and I went out to my friend Johnnyís land to shoot fireworks. Johnny got a little crazy
with the fireworks and started shooting them at people. He shot one at me, hit me directly
into the eye and it burnt my eye. I just fell to the ground, on my knees, I screamed. I
was blinded into my right eye and they rushed me to the hospital right after that and the
doctors told me that the burns caused my eyelids to scar to my eyeball and they had to be separated
and they had to form pockets between my eyelids and my eyeball. Since my injury Iíve had
to wear a patch; every day I go somewhere I have to put medication in.
Iím taking the castle and putting it into my house.
Iím taking the volcano and putting PVC pipe with diesel fuel and lighting it on fire.
Johnny you have the safest ideas I have ever heard. Youíd probably get arrested if people
just heard the stuff you say. Johnny was very upset about the accident and
he just felt really really bad. If someone did that to me, Iíd probably feel
pretty mad at him, but heís a lot more patient, understanding than I would have been.
After the accident he was pretty depressed. Right after it happened, As a family we just
had to all pull together and be strong for Landon.
There you go. Landon is very very special to me, as a mother,
because heís really a caring person, he puts others before himself. But, he overcame that
depression and Landon and Johnny remained friends.
I was never mad at him. I donít hold grudge against him or anything like that.
I just felt like if that Landon was a strong enough person to forgive and forget, as his
mother I can also forgive and forget. You are so handsome.
I went on surgery because I plan on going to a university, Iíve been meeting a lot
of new people. The surgery will help to restore my appearance to how I used to look and this
procedure will help me to be more outgoing and not to tell the story every time I meet
someone new. Hello. You must be Landon. Nice to meet you.
Iím Lisa Cassileth. Nice to meet you too.
Alright. So Iíve heard a lot about you. Letís take a look at this eye.
My name is Lisa Cassileth. Iím a board certified plastic surgeon and I practice both in cosmetic
and reconstructive surgery. Are you mom and dad?
I am. Iím Carla. I see a lot of cases where the patient has
already been through a lot of traumatic injuries and we do the reconstruction to help that
patient. Weíre going to do a total of 6 surgeries.
They took skin from my mouth and put it behind my eyelid to help reduce the scaring from
the burns. So how about the second one?
Same thing every time. Got you.
Landon is a handsome young guy, but he still has a distracting and disfiguring injury on
his face. I think we can get him to a point where people are not staring at him and he
can walk on the street in confidence. Letís plan this surgery. I think we should
do it in 2 parts. The first part is going to be the majority of the surgery. A lot of
the skin, letís just call it blob, a scarred tissue is got to be taking down so it doesnít
overhang your upper lid. Okay? Alright.
We definitely got to involve Dr. Massry and heís going to do some of the inside work
of the eye too, to make sure that that pocket for the eyeball is normal. Dr. Massry specializes
in eye reconstruction. Hey guys. How are you? Iím Dr. Massry, itís
a pleasure. Landon how are you? Iím good.
My name is Dr. Massry. Iím an upfalmic plastic and reconstructive surgeon and I specialize
in cosmetic and reconstructive surgery of the forehead, eyelids and middle face. Today
Landonís here to see me about reconstructing his eyelids and socket. Look at my finger
here. Look down. And all the way up. What Iím checking here is what excursion or movement
this eyelid has. Itís excellent. Weíll get the upper lid up and weíll get
the lower lid tightened. Iíll work with Dr. Cassileth. Weíll get it as close to perfect
as we can. What I can tell you is that when weíre done with this first surgery and we
have the false eye put into your eye, youíre going to be 90% better than you are right
now and thatís amazing. 90% better than you are right now is way ahead
of the game and thatís what weíre going to do.
Sounds great! This is the only trick, unfortunately, for
the upper lid surgery, which is the tough part, thinning it out, getting it to be the
right height and getting it to move normally, I need your cooperation, which means youíre
awake buddy. I need him awake for a part of the surgery.
Thatís an unusual request to make on someone, but in this case there is no alternative.
Iím going through a lot of scar tissue. Iím going to ask him to look up and down and to
help me identify the movement of the muscle. When he is sleeping and his eyes are open
itís guessing. When heís awake I can be pretty exact. And it has to be exact, because
I donít want to go in here more than once. When someone goes through this kind of trauma,
they have to accept it, before theyíre willing to do anything about it. Landon had to come
to a conclusion that it was time to do something about it and he did. I promise you that if
Landon went off to school he would have a very rough time. His self-confidence would
be shaken, heís at that age where interactions with women, interactions with friends at school
become very important, so good spirits, good parents, good family. Weíll take good care
of you. Alright man. You take care. Weíll take very
good care of you. At the beginning of the surgery theyíll tell
you that they want you a little bit awake before. How many of you would stay awake during
a surgery? How many of you would tell me: Are you crazy?
Are you ready? Yeah.
Are you exited? Yeah. Iím ready to see how it turned out.
Iím ready to see Dr. Massry and Dr. Cassileth for my surgery today. Iím not too nervous,
Iím just a little anxious to see how everything is going to turn out.
Weíre going to be out there. Take care of you, okay?
Alright. Landon had a lot of little surgeries, but
this is a biggie and weíre very nervous or anxious to see what the outcome is going to
be. I love you, babe.
I love you too. Today is Landonís surgery and Dr. Massry
and I weíll be doing the whole case together. Iím going to really focus on recreating his
socket, making sure that he can wear a painted eye
My part of the procedure will be making sure that the scaring of the eye is as minimum
as possible. At the beginning of the surgery theyíll tell
you that they want you a little bit awake. Itís not a big deal. If anything hurts youíll
just have to say ìAuî. Iím going to have to be awake for the first
part of the surgery today. Iím not really too worried about it. I think Iíll be ok.
Thatís just a little medication thatíll help you relax. Iím going to head in okay?
How are you feeling? A little chill? Perfect. Heís going to have to be awake for the first
part of the surgery. Iím going through a lot of scar tissue and distorted anatomy . Iím
going to ask him to look up and down to help me identify the movement of the muscle. How
many of you would stay awake during a surgery, to adjust your eyelid position? How many of
you would you tell me: Are you crazy? You think Iím going to stay awake while youíre
cutting on my eye? Are you ready?
Yeah. How are you feeling, Landon?
Good. Weíll talk you through it, once we get going.
Heís going to have to be awake for the first part of the surgery. Itís a very difficult
case. Iím going to ask him to look up and down to help me identify the movement of the
muscle; to get his eyelid height correct, to get it to function right and to look right,
I need his assistance. Weíll get started here. The first thing Iím
going to do is to debone the scar tissue from the upper lid. I can feel the scar. The eyelid
has 7 or 8 layers in it Ö
