JOINING US. I'M Chris Schukei. Shelby is on assignment.
. Chris>> Governor Heineman this morning vetoed LB 671,
a bill that would outlaw cougar and mountain lion hunting in the state.
The bill was introduced by Senator Ernie Chambers. LB 671 would have repealed
legislation from 2012 that authorized mountain lion hunting in the state through
permits from the Game and Parks Commission.
The 2012 bill passed with a vote of 49 to 0. In his objections, Heineman
noted that the repeal eliminates an important tool used for wildlife management
to protect both the health and safety of citizens and other wildlife.
The Governor also had concerns that the bill was potentially unconstitutional
based on a 2012 adoption to the Nebraska constitution making hunting and fishing the
preferred means of managing and controlling wildlife.
An override of the veto will require the approval of 30 members of the Legislature.##
