Hello, I'm Jeremy from TurboTax with important news on how you can prepare for an audit of your tax return.
Most people cringe when they think about the possibility of being audited by the IRS. But for the most part there is no reason to.
If you know what to expect beforehand, you will realize that it usually is a quick, efficient and fair process.
In the event the IRS does contact you about your tax return, don't fret.
Most of the time it just wants more information on something specific such as one of your itemized deductions.
For example, suppose you recently had health issues and reported some unusually high medical expenses.
The amount of your medical expense deduction may have stood out to the IRS but this does not mean it's going to reduce it.
In all likelihood, the IRS probably just wants to ensure you actually incurred those expenses.
Simply providing them with some details of your illness and some of your hospital bills should be sufficient to satisfy the IRS agent.
Regardless of the reason you were audited, it will always be in your best interest to
fully cooperate with the IRS and deal with the agent in a professional manner.
Remember, IRS agents are tax payers too. When you use TurboTax, you've got some extra help in your corner.
TurboTax includes our audit support center which helps you find out why the IRS contacted you,
determine what it means and prepare your next steps. We also offer an audit defense service
which provides full representation by a tax professional in case you're audited.
