we really felt that our fan base had become a little bit
disaffected from our team and we wanted a coach that could connect
having gone through this process recently and not having a successful
outcome
I realized that fit is really important
between things that happened within their program the lack of
success that they've had on the floor the needed to bring their community
together
I really believe strongly that our coaches are also
educators and I wanted a coach that I thought could really connect
with our student-athletes and mentor them
about life. (Driscoll) Father Shanley and I were looking for somebody that had
unbelievable passion in their heart, somebody that really believes that we
good build a championship basketball program. - A coach who has been successful
as a head coach and has a proven track record. I knew when I first
shook Ed Cooley's hand that he was the guy that I wanted because
I really was impressed by his passion and his sincerity
his honesty and
the narrative of the dream job and coming home
it's kinda a no brainer. The question for me was will we,
will we be able to get him to come to Providence because he has had a lot of job
opportunities and pretty much could
go where he wanted to go. So we didn't interview anybody else. Ed was the only guy.
The truth of the matter is, Providence College needed
Ed Cooley more than Ed Cooley needed Providence College.
ladies and gentlemen, our next head coach, Ed Cooley
Hi, I'm Ed Cooley. Nice to meet you.
(name inaudible) You as well
Thank you
Go Friars. Thank you.
Hi. Ed Cooley. Nice to meet you.
Lisa
Your husband and I go way back, way way back
It's great to be home
There's nothing like home
I'm really really blessed and I thank all of you
all of you
for the support that you give to these young men and women.
You can't. You won't. You're not good enough. You're not educated enough
No way. One day when I was sneaking into the Dunk, one day I was sneaking
into Alumni Hall
I said I'm gonna be the head coach of Providence College.
I promise you I said that. And for all those non-believers,
for all those non-believers, I had hope. And guess what,
I'm the head basketball coach of Providence College. And I'm proud.
So when you have all those tough times when you're at home with these young men
and women
that haven't come from traditional homes. Tell them they can,
tell them they will. And I know there may be financial stresses,
there may be emotional stresses, there's arguments,
there's tears. There's love there's hugs. At the end of the day, they can too become the
people and the person that you want these young men and women
to become. Under the most difficult times,
don't give up on these kids. They can too
become a congressman. They can too become
a lawyer. They can too become teachers, educators,
people who make influence in other people's lives. Continue to educate those
young men and women
because you are going to make the biggest difference in their life and they
too are gonna sit on a podium one day
and sing your praises and then they'll turn somebody's life around,
turn somebody's life
around, turn somebody's life around.
