JOANNE FARYON (HOST): Hello, I'm Joanne Faryon.
As part of our prop 13 coverage we want
to show you how your property tax dollars are distributed.
This year the county will collect almost $4 billion in property taxes
from commercial and residential property.
All property taxes collected in the county stay in the county.
Here's how they get divided: The largest portion of property taxes goes to local schools -
nearly 44 percent or $1.7 billion.
The second largest amount goes to the county, just over 20 percent,
the cities are right behind, receiving just under 20 per cent.
Nearly 11 percent is distributed to redevelopment agencies.
The remainder goes to special water, fire and sewer districts.
Less then one per cent is left for libraries.
Property taxes are only one source of revenue for schools, cities and counties.
They also rely heavily on state funds.
