How to paint a red apple in Watercolor by Yong Chen
Within the define, this is the space. If you like what you see or maybe you want
to move it little bit to the left, to the right.
And then, after you decided that is what you want.
Maybe, move it little bit more to the right. Just for this is a demonstration
I’m ready to mark other elements that would be in here, at the top, over here.
I know there is a little dark area here, and we also need to mark where is the highlight.
The highlight would be here. So, take your time.
So, first thing, we’re going to apply the base color to the apple.
And we use a big brush. Making sure your brush is soften enough.
So make sure you moisture it with water. Good, ready to go.
First, we’re going to put some yellow colors. Take a little yellow color and blend it to
the red. a little bit more like orange color, but not
much. See that? This big brush, is good (for wide
area). so I’m going to put little bit color over
here. Oh, need a little bit more yellow color.
A little bit more yellow color, okay. Put a little color over here, right here,
around it, as you see. Even though, the big brush, you don’t have
to use the whole brush. You can use the corner, okay.
So, second thing, what am I going to do? Since it’s still a little wet,
I’m going to get little red colors now. just blend it over here, just simply tap it
on both sides. So, now, we’re going to use the corner,
use the edge of the brush. See, there’s a very nice blend in color
here, because the area is still wet.
It’s not very very very wet, but it is just wet enough,
Slide it through this way, and… ok. We’re going to make something even more
red color. Apply more red color over here.
Please remember, this’s only the base colors, so we are going to put a few more layers later.
Put a little more red colors from outside. Turning this side to cover that space.
Now, it’s good. We’re going this way, we’re going to cover
most white areas, but we’re going to leave the center to be
white, like this, ok. We’re going to get more red colors.
It’s in shape now. Little bit more red color, blend it in, like
this. As we go, we want to put some darker colors.
How are we going to make some colors darker? Ok, we introduce some blue colors into the
mixed colors here. Get little bit more red,
it’s almost like a dark purple color right now.
Now the color looks good. We’re going to try that, put a little bit
more red. So, we’re going to put it right here, from
outside, right here, a little bit, right there. That’s the shadow side.
We’re going to place it here, ok. Place the color on the bottom left.
Now, we have the dark color and the light color.
Ok, I’m going to have a little more red, kinda like warm purple color.
little more red, and just put it right in between here.
Ok, create little texture, slightly brush down this way,
and maybe have little bit more red, less dark, little lighter.
Because I want to put little lighter color right here.
I use my left hand as a support. So, put it right here.
A little color here, over here, ok. I’m going to put little color over here
too. So get a little bit.
That color is almost dry, because we started from that area first,
So I don’t want to get that much of colors on the brush.
Apply a little dark color over here, just use the corner of the brush.
Here you go, Over there, ok.
I think it is good for now. We’re going to do a little more later.
What’re we going to do next? You see that, that’s a little lighter.
The area is little dry already because we putted the color there little bit earlier.
So we know, ah, what things are now. Actually not.
I’m going to fix a little bit about the highlight,
and allow little bit more time on the edge to dry,
before we come back to create the wet cast shadow.
What’re we going to do? We’re going to soften this brush.
What we like to do is to start moving the brush outward to
create little soft highlight. You don’t want to put too much water into
it, because that’s going to be bleed too much
into the outside wet areas. We’re going to see… if it comes out some
textures that we don’t want, we can fix that later.
We don’t really need to worry about it. I think I accidentally dropped some water
into the area. It’s going to look like fuzzy, but it’s
fine. Keep your confidence,
and knowing that you’re not coming here to make a million dollars,
just to have fun. so, relax.
Whatever it’s going to come out, there’s always a technique and a way to
fix it. Maybe not exactly what you want originally,
But at the end, You want to have a fun experience. Ok, now it gets little bit more of soft.
I even want to… actually lifting-off… I want to do a little more over here, lighter.
Be persistent, maybe lift little bit color over here.
I want to create little texture. That is fine.
A little texture over here that I want to create.
Ok, that is good. So this almost ready, but not yet.
I’m going to come back here, put a little yellow into the purple color,
make a little brownish color and what’s that going to do.
I want to take care of that little color of the cast shadow.
I want to put a little cast shadow right here, ok.
And put a little kind of that color somewhere over here,
just try to create little 3D effect. We’re going to apply some washes,
small wash color in this area later. That is the base of the colors.
We’re going to come back to do another layer, after we’re taking care of the cast shadow.
So what are we going to do with the cast shadow? I think I want to wet the area before we go
forward. So I want to wet this outside area,
because I really want to make that looks softer, the outside, okay.
You know when you wet the area, it always looks softer. That’s it.
What are we going to do? We’re going to start putting some… almost
looks like neutral color. I want to get little… mix a little neutral
color. A little more yellow over here into here,
and now it’s almost green. Get a little red, and that is, almost like
that…that looks good. I think the color almost there.
Maybe a little warmer, ok, that’s good. So, we’re going to start from inside here,
ok. When the color goes to the edge it will start
blur. Maybe blur too much if you don’t even want
it, but let it blurs, let it go.
We probably have to go back to do another time, and somewhere needs to be darker.
So it’s kinda blur a little unexpectedly outward.
Fine, we’re going to come back here. Wipe it off.
I am going to do a little wet texture. Just get a little color here.
Get a little clean red color right here. Ok, I’m going to start apply some red colors,
I’m going to add a little bit red color here.
Create little texture, come in here. We’re going to put more, a little more red
color over here. Now the color get little dirty.
Here, create little details. And, that makes it little more interesting.
Now, little color here, there, ok. See that, after the colors get little dry,
and it looks lighter. So that means we’re going to put another
layer later. So next thing we’re going to do is trying
to create little reflecting light underneath by lifting-off.
lifting-off is just a great technique for this kind of effect, because it’s really
soft. We can control how light we want it to be.
Ok, that’s good. See that, it’s a little soft.
If you want it lighter, do a couple more. Ok, let me see.
This is already dry, closed to dry, like 80, 90%.
So, it’s good. I’m going to use a big flat brush.
Going to do another layer of color wash. Ok, the same colors that we mixed.
Uh, maybe little warm color in here. Get a little warm color,
we see little warm color over here. Alright, we come back here.
Do it one more time. Now because the outside over there is little
bit lighter, so I’m going to just use the water.
Just a little color blend into the outside area.
That is good. Blend in over there too. But I did not get into the area because I
want it to be even darker than that. So that’s why I left that space,
just to come back… to use a small brush, a small round brush.
Make a dark purple color… much darker purple color.
Now I’m going to get into that area. Like that, so much darker… getting to the
outside. So since we’re here and use that color,
I’m going to create little details. So this painting’s almost done.
And what we probably want to do is to use little bit more time, to create little dots
on the skin, to create the apple texture. so you can use the tip, just the tip, just
the small tip, to create the suggestion of the texture.
It has little dots here and there. We do want the outside little tint color,
so what we’re going to do. We’re going to just pick a little grey color.
But, this, I think it has little more yellow color, I like it.
So, just going to put it little outside here. So making sure you are not actually getting
too much of connect with the wet color. And that is fine.
You can use it to lighten the areas that you don’t want it to be.
Use the same color. I can continue to paint it to the outside.
