I have been fortunate in my life to have a wonderful family, health, and happiness. I
grew up on a farm in Ohio, in the middle of an Amish community. My siblings and I had
lots of animals and grew up traipsing all over the countryside. I went to The College
of Wooster, also in Ohio, where I met my husband Graig, who is a social worker for Chapel Hill
Carrboro City schools. We have three children; Ashley, who is 21 and at UNC Charlotte, Mason,
9, who will be in fourth grade, and Will, 6, who will be a first grader. We also have
three chickens, Lucy, Sally, and Penny who provide us with more eggs than we can eat.
In addition, we keep bees. We recently got a lab/golden mix who we named Maggie. I teach
at Southwest Elementary in Durham, where I've been for 15 years.
Besides my family and of course teaching, my greatest passion is home improvement. Our
house had been a neglected rental property when we bought it, and over the years, I've
transformed the house and gardens. Last summer, my husband came home from his weekly basketball
game to find I'd ripped out our kitchen cabinets. I worked like a maniac for weeks installing
new cabinets, countertops, plumbing, fixtures, and mouldings, all completely by myself. I
love the satisfaction of doing the home improvements and gardening. Every day, you can find me
in my garden, feeding beetles to the chickens, pruning, planting, and harvesting. Who knows
what my next project will be!
