Hello my name is Mark Sampson. I am the Assistant Director for Psychology training. I would
like to thank you for your interest in our APA accredited doctoral psychology internship.
And I would like to give you a little background on our internship here at U of M CAPS. The
internship year starts with a three week orientation. This orientation is really designed to get
interns up and running so that when the students get here the week of labor day that your ready
to start seeing clients and get started with your year. And so outside of the orientation
your typical week really involves a lot of different things. Of course you see individual
clients and you will see a lot of them. You will also have an opportunity to co-facilitate
a group. You will also have many seminars which consists of our multicultural seminar
that runs the entire year, we have an assessment seminar, practice issues seminar, and a few
others. And everybody on staff interns and permanent staff have a three hour crisis or
walk in shift and this would be part of your week. You would also have 4 hours of supervision
and then we would meet um the psychology interns and myself for a weekly touch base. And I
want to talk a little bit more about groups and basically all of our training is very
sequential. It starts off with didactic training and then you do some shadowing and you have
more individual work. And groups is an example of this you start off with didactic group
training and then come fall and winter semester you would co-facilitate a group with a senior
staff member and then spring and summer semester you have an opportunity to run a group on
your own. Outreach is another big component here at U of M CAPS. And each intern is responsible
for doing three outreach programs throughout the course or each semester and this really
gets you out and involved on campus and is one of the strengths of our internship. Another
strength is our supervision experience. You get four hours of individual supervision each
week and we really pride ourselves in our quality of supervision and we really match
you up with supervisors that will stretch you and enhance the skills you already have.
And then come winter term you have the opportunity to provide supervision to practicum students
from area schools here in southeast Michigan. Another opportunity during your internship
year is the Big Ten College Counseling Center Conference. And each year a different Big
Ten school hosts this conference. And we fund interns to attend this conference and we encourage
them to present if they wish. In addition to the Big Ten Conference we also have a Michigan
Intern Retreat where a couple times a year we meet for a full day retreat with other
psychology interns throughout the state of Michigan. So our application process. Our
deadline for applications is the first Friday in November. And then we let you all know
by December fifteenth whether we are going to invite you for a telephone interview. Now
we do telephone interviews for various reasons but the biggest reason is that we really want
everyone to have an equal opportunity um in this interview process. We do identify that
some people do not have the means to visit U of M. Again I would like to thank you for
your interest in our psychology internship and I identify that this can be a stressful
process and I hope that you take care of yourself and good luck in this process.
