Rio. January 23rd 1993. After having played that he'd put as the worst concert in his career,
Kurt Cobain, the leader of Nirvana, left the stage creeping in.
That was a one-way ticket to self-destruction.
Kurt Cobain commited suicide in April 1994, with his blood-stream full of ***.
Ten years after the Nirvana concerts in Brazil, "Fantastico" unveils what the daily routine of one of the greatest bands in the world was like here.
A mysterious ampoule, secret recordings at a Rio studio and a crazy night in São Paulo were part of this story.
That was unforgettable. I'll never forget that. Such a great night out!
That was great. It was like my life's dream came true.
They got loaded all night long. Everyone assholed. We partied 'til 8 in the morning that day.
'Record everything!'. The order that day was 'Record everything!'.
Back in 93, Nirvana was already the biggest band on the planet.
'Smells Like Teen Spirit' was being played worldwide non-stop.
The millionaire superstars weren't aware, but they had a buddy in Brazil
The punk singer João Gordo, who had met Dave Grohl at a festival in Holland.
And that'd been a while since you hadn't seen each other but when Dave saw you, he then recognized you right away.
Yeah, he did and said 'Hey Gordo how you doin'?' and all that.
And I gave him a lot of gifts. Then I went to meet Courtney Love and Kurt Cobain.
And then I quickly joined the gang. We were pampered all the time and had a close relationship with the guys.
That was insane, man! Insane!
That was way beyond insane especially for the fact that Courtney Love was around. The moody and loud Kurt Cobain's wife.
By the way, she got jealous 'cos of my ex-girlfriend. I had to explain to her that there was no point in that.
But she got really, really jealous. She wanted to kick the chick's ***.
She looked at us, and threw the watermelon piece she was having away, and started having an argument with him just beside me.
And that was very funny.
After that situation had been handled, it was time to go for the night fun.
Just after a weird show at the Morumbi Stadium, Dave Grohl and bass player Krist Novoselic headed back to the hotel.
Kurt Cobain and Courtney Love didn't.
The most interested in getting loaded was the couple, man.
And in fact they did. They got loaded to the bones.
That was a wonderful night. A very funny one.
We headed to a nightclub called "Der Temple", located down there at Augusta Street which was a sixties-and-grunge-rock -specialized club.
This is where the "Der Temple" club used to be before, and today all that's left of it is a construction work going on.
Back then, however, the "Der Temple" was a highly-regarded place, which used to attract most local rock fans.
As soon as we got in, my friend who was the owner locked the doors and said 'No one gets in, no one gets out'.
They drank 'til they got really assholed. He used to drink lots of ***. Way too much.
There was sixties music in the background, from the Beatles to surf music.
Kurt was nice to everybody. Nice but never happy, though.
Then Kurt sat beside me, and asked 'What's the matter with you?'
So cute.
Then I said, 'I'm having a terrible stomach ache'.
And he answered, '***! A stomach ache? I know what it feels like,
But I've got a great medicine here'.
So he took this off from his carryall.
I went to the toilet and pretended I'd shot it. But I took this home.
'Buprenorphine'.
This is the technical name for the gift, as we put it, that Kurt gave her.
A curse in disguise. That's a powerful anesthesic, similar to morphine, which can cause serious dependence.
It was early morning yet when Gordo, Ale, Kurt and Courtney decided to 'go for a walk'.
Everyone's so wasted, and when we reached Amaral Gurgel Street, Courtney Love spotted a ***,
a big black ***, that guy looked square, so full of silicon in his body. Square ***, square butt.
And she yelled, 'Stop the car! Stop the car!' and then she jumped off and started touching the guy.
So she took $300 from her pocket and gave him. Then one of my friends said, 'No, don't do it! It's a lot of money!'
To which she replied, 'I don't give a damn. We've already made $150,000 tonight, $300 means *** to me'.
It was there where we met journalist Marcelo Orozco, author of a book that looks into Kurt Cobain's personality.
Why do you think he got attracted to a place like this? He popped in to check on the local shemales.
Kurt himself sometimes used to wear dresses onstage. That had more to do with shocking, going out of the conventional.
So everything that seemed to be unconventional and unexpected ended up attracting Kurt.
A Kurt who had a double-sided life. If João, Ale and Giggio met one partying Cobain, this sound engineer from Rio
got in touch with a different side of Kurt. The perfectionist band leader.
While they were in Brazil, Nirvana used to come to this Rio studio almost on a daily basis.
So this is the room? This is where Nirvana recorded in Brazil?
Exactly.
To Courtney Love's detractors delight, who are not a few, Dalmo reinforces an old suspicion
That that Hole's most famous album was in fact written and played by Nirvana.
Everything they'd been rehearsing, was being recorded and there was stuff being actually played by Nirvana.
Certainly for Courtney Love's band.
So you didn't see her actually playing? You don't remember that at least once?
Nope. Not even a single time.
And where are those tapes?
They simply told us to pack them all. Everything was put away in boxes. Then they left carrying those boxes.
And nobody knows where those boxes ended up.
Among them, who used to play a leading role? What were you able to notice?
Well, according to what I saw here, it was Kurt for sure.
He was the one who made it ready for recording, they rehearsed and he kind of went over details meticulously.
One meticulousness which is also visible on this book still unpublished in Brazil - the private Kurt Cobain's diaries.
Sold to an American publisher by his widow Courtney Love.
In this piece, he announces 'Our last and final name will be Nirvana'.
Here, Kurt complains about a drummer's laziness. 'A band needs to practice at least five times a week'.
Over this page, he drew promotional T-shirts of the band.
Another personality trait of Kurt arises clearly - his depression.
On the horror drawings he used to do.
The angry texts.
On this desperate statement, 'I hate myself and I want to die'.
I found him to be very low. He had something on his T-shirt saying 'I hate myself and I wanna die'.
He said several times that he despised stardom. That he wasn't into that.
There used to be too many spreading clues, a negative mood, depression, nihilism, negativism.
That had been expected to happen. He was a very depressed guy.
Kurt Cobain's body was found on April 8th 1994, dead from a shotgun blast to the head. He was 27.
'... and now please welcome the biggest band ever...
NIRVANA!!!'
