My name is Aaron Thomas, I'm a fourth year photojournalism major at RIT
and I'm a contributor to the 585 Magazine.
After we the did the interview, um... they asked us if we wanted to go hangout, um.. at one of their
apartments and Josh and I were like yea, sure definitely. Cause you know they are really cool and we
were down to hangout, and you know get to know them better cause the better we know them the better
we can tell their story.
So... the first night we um... we were invited back to his house, or one of their houses and uh, you know just
had a few beers and watched a few movies and uh, just uh, hung with them and got to know them.
I think on that night is when I took one of my favorite pictures of Occupy, and its a picture of the four people
that we met at first um... sitting on the couch, well actually one guy is like laying on top of them and they're all
just in this kind of a perfect frozen moment of like laughter and you know someone could look at it
out of context and just think that they're like high school friends, they've been friends since they were like
fourteen or whatever.
The uh, the one image that I was really proud of that came out of the Occupy story was um, the image of um,
one single occupier sitting in her tent looking out onto the rest of the camp which was wet from the rain and
um... there was this kind of a glow coming from the tent which she was in, this warm glow
Uh, it was very dark at camp, it was very uh, it was very uh... orange [laughs]
but a lot of uh, artificial light but um, you just work through those things and you do your best
to make it feel like you were there.
I guess I'd say like, the most difficult part was, you know, remembering to wear thick shoes. Like I
would just show up in my Vans and my feet would be freezing and I'd be kicking myself
like, I'm from Maine, why am I doing this, this is stupid.
I felt really integrated with it as opposed to you know, I'm a photographer, I'm behind my camera photographing them.
I really enjoyed working as a group with Aaron Thomas um... it was, I had never really shot a story as a
group before, so that was a good experience.
Um, yea, it was really good shooting with Josh Kuckens. Were both really good friends, but we've never really
worked on a project together. I think it's really cool to work with someone else who has a completely different
shooting style to yours cause, I mean I think uh, specifically our pair um, it complimented each other.
[Josh] We went down there about nine or ten times um, to collect
images and audio and it's been um... it's been a lot of fun shooting that story.
