[crowd cheering]
[male narrator] Second lady of the United States, Dr. Jill Biden,
along with Jane Oates, Assistant Secretary of the Employment and Training Administration,
visited MCC's Health Science Institute
as part of a nationwide community college to career tour.
The three day tour highlighted a number of successful partnerships
between community colleges and local businesses
working to train students in area-specific fields most needed by companies today.
[audience clapping]
--We have recognized that not only
can community colleges change lives they can change America.
Quite simply, community colleges are critical to America's future,
that's why I'm so proud that President Obama
has made the community colleges central to the administration's mission
of having the best educated, most competitive workforce in the world.
[narrator] Dr. Biden and Miss Oates also participated in a panel discussion
with representatives from colleges, businesses,
and students that have benefitted from this targeted approach to job skills training.
--It's-it's interesting because, you know, through the internship
I was able to easily kind of kind of move into those roles where I was,
"Okay, so I learned how to do a change, now all of a sudden,
"you know, I'm making the change in production," right.
I could cause very adverse affects if I do this wrong
but I've been I've- I've had enough training and enough guidance
where I've gotten to the point where I can do this
and my manager treats me like any other associate.
--I think one of the assumptions that we made early on, having nothing else to base it on,
we said, "Well, we'll think- we think it'll take about two years.
"If interns start coming out of high school
"it'll take about two years before they're ready for full-time employment."
Both of these gentlemen were employed a year, little bit less...
six months, a year and they were ready, they really were, they had the capability.
It's amazing how that learning accelerates in the context of that real-world environment.
[narrator] By working together with companies like Cerner,
MCC offers students the opportunity to work in real-world environments
and prepares them for immediate employment.
