An effort is underway in California to memorialize the lives of 1,600 killed in a traffic accident..
all of whom were fish.
Earlier this month, the saltwater bass
fish -- who were on their way to an Asian supermarket at the time of the accident -- spilled
out of the back of a container truck during a highway crash involving two other vehicles.
That led a volunteer with PETA to write to the Irvine Public Works Department requesting
this memorial be built honoring the lives of the fish, saying:
“Although such signs are traditionally reserved for human fatalities, I hope you'll make an
exception because of the enormous suffering involved in this case.”
PETA has
called for other animal memorials in the past, but this would be the first for fish. Media
outlets didn’t exactly take the call seriously.
A writer for msnNow writes,
“PETA has never been shy about courting publicity, no matter how ridiculous the ploy.
But its latest stunt is pretty fishy.”
And The Huffington Post asked on Twitter whether
this is PETA’s most ridiculous campaign yet.
A spokesperson for the city of Irvine
says it has no plans to erect such a memorial, but a PETA representative says the group will
keep pushing this cause.
