jankowsky who is in
amandime mispronouncing his last name
thank god for pinup i'm not going to handicap deal with that uh... so much in
the future but um
uh... he
uh... sat
atop a nasty see that had changed their classification it basically would have
made a bad verizon suit mood right and they wouldn't be able to do it
uh... yet
and telling them what happen energetic out he was that he created
he created an open internet order that was passed at the end of two thousand
ten
uh... and he said that this protected net neutrality that in fact it's it's
riddled with loopholes that does it really protect net neutrality
over wireless internet connections and so if they so his order
it somewhat flimsy the f_e_c_ order the telecast cuban places someone flimsy in
and arrest
on this notion that the f_c_c_ can do this under title one
and that's uh... that's what ripen is challenging in the courts right now and
so we look at this business
this one goes it will be heard until the summer the earliest will probably
here the decision is in the fall but at that time if they decide to
takeaway
that you did that flimsy protection
will be handed out her wild west
scenario where eyes p like eighteen pm brightening comcast
can basically do whatever they want taken what they can block certain
services that they don't like they can
really take control
idea of your internet experience away from internet users
without any legal recourse so will be in this period where we're we're gonna have
to do a lot of organizing prepress stuff a lot of this week
who ran a coalition coffee the internet dot com working with a number of other
groups that just to make sure that the that the public is aware that there's a
problem there and have them speak up to their members of congress in
and a contact the f_e_c_ to give
then the chair
uh... the political momentum to do the right thing alright now now and i
appreciate that you you know you come from an advocacy group and so it is that
i don't want to put you in a uh... position where you're going to hamper
your
***
to continue the advocate affectively but was julius janeane hausky
with was he
it one of the single
most disappointing figure fears uh... in in the bush administration choose me
uh... in the oklahoma administration i mean this guy seems to locate came in
with so much um... with with so much promise it was so much that uh... people
anticipate this guy would be so good uh... in the f_c_c_ and he seemed at
every turn
to be very very with media and 'em
uh... in in religious tel
leader he
did not push for things that everybody anticipated he would
until it can take up the with a major
major disappointment
non-jewish in a county
wrote in on the coattails of obama two thousand eight election obama at that
time when he was when he was candidate obama before becoming president obama
said that let me try to dedicate u_k_ visit is quoting take a back seat to no
one image support of net neutrality
and he made it that his number one telecommunications policy issue
juliet unocal ski was an advisor at the time
uh... for for a candidate obama so every expectation when he came into office is
that he would put in place a strong ruling to protect the open internet but
uh... he and i think you he in
improved himself to be a very strong
leader at the f_t_c_ and i think i wasn't intimidated
by very powerful corporate lobbying eighteen pm comcast in
either even people within the white house we understand too
we're listening to wanted you to who
who pressured him in any buckle
i mean we've you know we we have an organization
that uh... organizes people had to get the message we've we put two million
comments in the f_e_c_ that unheard of
rarely that the f_t_c_
in a public proceeding get that many comments from the public two million
comment that said we need strong that neutrality rules and we need to now so
he certainly had the backing of the public
to do something do the right thing and and he buckle
and we had so one day
and we've got about by the f_t_c_ and we are we gain three waffle breakfast
to all of the f_t_c_ staff who walk through the front door there
with a sign that says you know dear juliet the waffle on net neutrality but
he but he did
he did well for all right uh... and and lastly are just got a couple minutes
here what's
is aside from the outcome of this uh... verizon suit and in the event of a rise
in loses then classic asian one becomes enough although uh...
uh... like you mentioned
the the compromise that was struck there still last for a uh... ultimately uh...
infringement in terms of uh... it's services are delivered wirelessly but
um... but what l
is uh... really crucial that the s_e_c_'s going to be dealing with in the
uh... coming months
that um... in the event that uh... tom wheeler gets uh...
will be uh... something we should wash infor
whether they're a lot of important issues that that will crosses gas one of
the group which is uh... is reallocation of spectrum
of your member or they were uh... a couple years back that we did a
transition from analog television broadcasting to digital broadcasting and
when that transition happen it freed up a lot of the public airwaves
brother uses in the f_c_c_ is now trying to decide
how we should use all the news that there was a lot of these airwaves are
perfect for making
wifi networks more ubiquitous and so uh... we're a pressure were pressuring
the f_c_c_
to really throw their waste unlicensed basis
so you could have
a wifi networks but don't just that are just limited to whether the corner
coffee shop
but actually canon veloped also
and give users an alternative to getting online you can you can use your
smartphone expect a wifi networks almost anywhere that you go
that's really important is another issue that you're going to have gotten about
what is the madre godzilla thing right because like if someone like google they
want something like that
right because
they want to be able to have their services amanda uh... delivered as
easily as possible to the end user
it's been interesting because uh... at even make big carriers
like life i don't know you know anybody who has been i phone on an eighteen p
network knows that it doesn't always work
uh... because a_t_t_ oversold
the iphone and their network and handle allowed to what a lot of people to go
with smart undertake to do with of offloading
and whenever they can find a wi-fi network
they can actually than they do a lot of their
they do a lot of their data
well you know chat data worker they share a lot of information and use it on
a wifi network and not on the a_t_t_ network so
it's in a strange way the the keep the carriers we can keep arrived in
and t mobile and metro pcf infamous friends and the others
daylight having wifi available because it means that they don't have to carry
so much of the data loads o
so i think it's a good idea all around i mean uh... there is that there still
some debate
about about how that specter's for years but i think you know
people genuine genuinely think wifi is a good idea
and uh... one other
a big issue
big issues around is an issue around broadcast ownership
uh... there's ongoing consolidation sinclair broadcast group for example
very conservative
uh... broadcast company based in maryland is buying up a lot of
television stations the f_c_c_ has caps
that prohibit too much ownership of of local televisions and radio stations by
one company they also have
they're also looking at a rule whether
whether a local newspaper and the local police station to be owned by the same
company
um... the f_e_c_ is trying to lift those fools that would allow a rupert murdoch
or sinclair broadcast group to be basically
basically hone the major news outlets in a single camera fighting to stop
the loosening of those regulations and alright well
mature tune car
the senior director a strategy for free press uh... dot org thanks so much for
joining us and uh...
uh... will be watching uh... this of rising ruling is going to be really
important and bullhorn hopefully uh... get a sense of who tom wheeler is
uh... maybe in his confirmation hearings maybe uh... more importantly afterwards
uh... thanks so much for joining us now
welcomed him
