Hi, I'm Stephen Mattingly, assistant professor of guitar at the UofL School of Music, this
year we're very proud to host the Guitar Foundation of America in its international convention
competition. The GFA is the largest classical guitar organization in the world and its international
competition is the most revered competition for the classical guitar. Its crowning achievement
is setting the career path for the next generation of classical guitarists. These are musicians
who will perform throughout the United States with concerts as part of their competition,
tour package. Additional concerts they'll play are in Brazil, China and across Europe.
Competitors this year are coming from around the world literally from China and all across
Europe, from South America. We have a guest artist line up that's joining us this week.
They're playing concerts each evening at 8 p.m. here in Comstock Hall and the concert
series concludes with a move down to the Brown Theater for Saturday and Sunday evening concerts.
I really hope you'll join us there in that beautiful space at the Brown Theater on Saturday
evening at 8 p.m. we'll enjoy the music of Berta Rojas and Pequita de Rivera as they
present an all Latin American program. Also part of this competition is a major component
for youth guitar, there's a lot of guitar education going on, lectures and workshops
all throughout the school of music. The place will be abuzz with a lot of activity. There's
all kinds of things to do here as part of the convention and many of the events are
free, some of them have a small fee. You can find out more information by contacting me
at 852 5607 or you can visit the GFA website at guitarfoundation.org. We hope you'll join
us for this busy week of classical guitar activity as the University of Louisville and
the city become the focal point of the international guitar scene.
