In this clip we'll talk about the immediate preparation just before the procedure, and
then the details a little bit of the procedure itself. Generally patients should plan on
a few visits to the physician before the procedure, so that she has a very good understanding
what to expect, and a good report has been developed, so that if there are problems after
surgery, as could sometimes happen, there's an understanding that the doctor would be
there to take care of them, and the patient understands that there is that possibility.
Prior to surgery, a patient should be as in good health as possible, because it is a purely
elective operation. Hopefully with no colds or infections, and certainly at a relatively
stable weight as possible, and able to tolerate and anesthetic. The anesthesia is usually
done with at least some sedation and local anesthesia, if not general anesthesia. General
anesthesia is my preference because I think the patient is well controlled. And that's
an environment where there's an anesthesia provider, such as a Certified Registered Nurse
and Anesthesiologist, or a M.D. Anesthesiologist. This would be for example, in a certified
operating room in a office, or in a certified surgery center operating room, or in a hospital.
In this environment the patient can be very well monitored. And any potential problems
can be identified and treated quickly for the patient?s safety.
