What a tough week for British diplomacy.
On the eve of a global summit to fight corruption and tax avoidance, British Prime Minister
David Cameron sure let it slip.
Nigerian President Buhari will be at the summit alongside Afghan president Ghani and things
might be a little awkward.
President Buhari has already said he was left feeling deeply shocked and embarrassed.
And while Prime Minister Cameron may have said Nigeria is one of the most corrupt countries
in the world – it actually isn’t entirely true.
According to Transparency International Nigeria is ranked 136 out of 167 countries when it
comes to corruption.
And while Cameron may be left a little uncomfortable, Britain’s monarch is also in damage control.
Queen Elizabeth the second was caught on camera calling Chinese officials very rude.
Her Majesty’s uncharacteristically candid comments come less than a year after a state
visit to the UK by Chinese premiere Xi Jing Ping.
On the surface the visit appeared to be all smiles as Britain bolstered trade ties with
the world’s second largest economy.
The visit was capped off with billions of dollars’ worth of deals.
Chinese officials have so far refused to comment on the Queen’s remarks.
